UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ are four countries that should be working together much more than they do.

Never mind the EU.

We're cousins?? what kind of messed up geneology is that? Cousin to the nation that birthed you....sounds sort of Ozarkian.

AUS, CAN, and NZ are "sisters" and UK is mother.

That comparison has paternalistic overtones which may not be popular with certain... Demographics.

Is it wrong if we make out with the UK?

UK media is taking a different slant on it.

William Hague will tomorrow  launch a worldwide network of  British Commonwealth embassies to rival the emergence of the EU as a foreign superpower.

The Foreign Secretary is in  Canada where he will sign an agreement to open joint UK-Canadian  diplomatic missions abroad.

He also hopes Australia and New Zealand will join the initiative whereby the four countries will pool their resources to extend their combined influence on world affairs.

One British diplomat put it more bluntly: ‘For all the grandiose talk of European unity, we have so much more in common with many Commonwealth countries than the EU – and not just the English language.
‘There is a saying in the British diplomatic corps that “the French want to do us over, the Germans want to lord it over us and the Italians are all over the place”.
‘We would never dream of trusting them with intelligence secrets, but we share everything with the Canadians, Aussies and Kiwis.
‘Brussels can extend its diplomatic reach – well, so can we.

The problem is, unlike the other Europeans, Britain had a world spanning empire and out of that Empire were carved new nations where the majority of the population were British, not just subjugated aboriginals who had to learn the white masters tongue. Out of a 'democratic' British Empire there arose several little democratic.. new Britains. Europeans were the rabble that battled on the mainland.

Britain has only been a member of the European Club for a few decades. It still remembers it used to head something bigger and better. To its west lays an entire continent dominated by the descendants of Britons, just as the island continent of Australia is dominated by former Britons. We should go so far as to say Britain has far more in common with the US, other than language, than it does with the Europeans.

FUCK YEAH! That's old school co-operation right there. Whoever proposed this best be recognized.

Unfortunately it'd be something that the Liberals and NDP would immediately jettison ASAP if they got into power just to appease Quebec (as usual). I don't see how successful it could be in fighting back against the 40+ years of anti-British sentiment that's been lodged in the Canadian political mindset since the Trudeau era.

After the way that the British under Tony Blair lap-dogged it for the Americans in Iraq, I'd be extremely hesitant of being a part of any "Anglosphere" that's automatcally taken for an auxiliary cohort for US foreign policy anyway. As despicable a politician as Jean Chretien was, keeping Canada officially out of the Iraq bumblefuck was exactly the right thing to do. In the absence of any convincing threat to Canada this is exactly the position I'd like us to maintain in perpetuity. I don't want the reflexive anti-American hostility of the EU, courtesy mostly of France's attitude, but I don't want us being dragged into future ill-gotten/fabricated US misadventures against the Muslims either.

We're all getting giddy with the idea of a resurgent Pax Britannia.

If the separatists want their french socialist state along the shores of the St. Lawrence they can have it. Unfortunately for us after ten years we'd have to take them back in and clean up the mess they made.

Why would a province have it's own embassy? If Canada had joint embassies with France I would have no problem, but a single province having an embassy is a problem.
