I didn't even know that we didn't have tanks in Afghanistan. I suppose that if we did, the opperation might have looked like an actual war. I'm glad to hear that they are getting what they need though
This will greatly improve battle out comes and reduce suicide attack on our troops. Our LAV III will not be engaged as much I would assume
I'm wondering if it will be used as some attempt to ram through a replacement. They can and are a maintenance burden here, more so over there. They turrets are good to go, but what about the hulls? In some cases they are paper thin (literally for a couple of Gagetown based Leo's). Will we be seeing another stopgap upgrade soon?
Still and all the DF support for the troops will be greatly appreciated, no doubt.
Target! Mud hut! Load HESH!
Since our major concern is going to be RPGs, should there not be a way to add some standoff protection to the hulls.
I just hope that our tank are ready for this if not there will be a lot of flag drape coffin coming home
Adding standoff protection for the hulls would simply be a quick-fix. There isn't a whole lot of hull to protect. Welding plates on the belly would come at a weight penalty cost. I can't help but to think back to all those "quick fixes" that went onto the 113's back in the day.
Elvis: If the RPG-29 is presently employed by the Taliban you'd be seeing the LAV's getting hit by them. ERA is pretty much yesterday's technology anyway and a threat to the infantry dismounts. Our tanks don't fight alone (a big violation of our doctrine) and that alone precludes the use of ERA on the Leo's.
If the Hezbollah and the terrorist in Iraq can get there hand on some RPG-29 why would the Taliban not be able to find some....

Didn't say they couldn't, I'm saying if they had them, they'd be using them. The RPG-29 isn't new (they're 17 years old) and tailored to specifically defeat ERA (which we don't use). The upgrades in armour use the newer composites that aren't susceptible to a two stage attack.
Will these Tanks being using Israeli Technology that can defend against RPG's being used?
Probably not, given the danger to dismounted troops and innocent civilians within built up area's.
Besides, wasn't that system only in the test phase?
Since there are not going to be any tank on tank battles, and the Taliban are basically footbound, they should add all the belly and side armour they can. Add sandbags and whatever other protection they can for the crews. If these tanks never come home I don't think any tears will be shed, but we must protect the crews.
Amen to that bro'
Considering these are pretty much going to be IED bait, I doubt the'll see much direct action. The Taliban are quicl\kly learning that any direct contact with Coalition forces and our fire support, quickly ends in their loosing people.
Some spall liners and sand bags on the floors would be nice though.
As for leaving them there...

The leopard2 are probably a better tank but the US is much closer than Germany if we need parts and reoplacements. One thing I don't like with the M1 is the fuel consumption. The logistic train just to keep them in fuel is huge and Canada simply does not have the transport ability. Australia bought M1s and they must be feeling that pinch too.
