I have no doubt that when push comes to shove as long as we maintian a presence in the arctic (which we have for almost 50 years) we don't need to worry to much. I don't think the Dannish nor the Russian would do anything once confronted with an armed force.

Its not really the Danish or the Russians we need to be concerned about.
Its the Americans.

It's a sovereignty operation" to counter grabs by Russia, Denmark, Norway and the United States, Brigadier General Chris Whitecross, commander of Joint Task Force North, told AFP.

Ok valley girl let me explain this to you in terms I hope you can understand, in simple points.
1) Russia's claim to arctic areas and Canada's arctic claims do not seriously overlap.
2) If we really want Hans Island we can take it, Denmark is not any real threat.
3) One of the most serious concerns in the Canadian Arctic is the status of the NORTHWEST PASSAGE. (I put it in caps to signify that it is important, are you taking notes?)
4) Canada considers the NORTHWEST PASSAGE to be INTERNAL CANADIAN WATERS.
5) The United States is trying to have the NORTHWEST PASSAGE recognized as an INTERNATIONAL STRAIT.
6) If the NORTHWEST PASSAGE is decided to be an INTERNATIONAL STRAIT like the US suggests, ships passing through will have the right of TRANSIT PASSAGE, meaning that Canada will have no say whatsoever on what passes through the heart of our arctic archipelago. Anyone could sail through there with anything (Russia for instance could park a CBG in the passage and legally we couldn't do jack sh*t).
Now is six points too much for you or are you starting to catch on and see the problem?
