My wife who was born and raised in Toronto said the same thing till she moved here to the states. Now she worries about her family in Canada recieving proper care ion the future.

That is only because of you and she believes your bullshit. I have many American friends who totally agree that they are being screwed. They wish they had the piece of mind that our public system offers. There is no such thing as being denied insurance in health care in canada because of a "pre-existing condition".

Change your job...same healthcare...

lose you job...same healthcare...

have kids, cancer, car accident, fall off a building, into a manhole, suffer from depression, diabeties, whatever...you are covered because you are a Canadian!!

Try switching jobs and maybe insurance in the states...how comfortable do you feel?

Blaming your health care problems on immigrants is scapegoating and is racist.

He didn't blame healthcare problems on immigrants and it would not be racist if he did so.

Or tax dollars go toward supporting a universal health care system for everyone - not to fund an industry of health insurance.

So as long as evryone has healthcare even though it sucks, at least everyone has the same chitty healthcare! nice theory

The USA has more people not covered by healthcare then Canada has people.

And per-capita costs twice as much in the states.

Canadians tend to live longer..how bad can it be when we get more years on average for half the cost....so you got some fancy doctors and technology...GUESS WHAT...Canadians are still healthier as a whole...

Not having insurance does not equate to not having healthcare.

The US federal government dictates that emergency services must be made available regardless of the ability to pay. It's one reason that we have illegal immigrants all getting up in our statez.

Emergency services, ya, but that's only 1 part of Healthcare.

If you are about to die, the hospitals will help you regardless of pay. However, they will only fix you up to get you stabilize, but you won't die.

Ya, I know what Emergency care is, but that's still not the same as having Healthcare. Try to get Cancer Treatment on an Emergency basis.

I am a relatively new poster and I have the irritating urge to irritate you right now. :D

But more seriously, I thought you made errors in your statements there.

1) It would be racist if he blamed a race for the healthcare problems you describe. He did not do so.

2) You can still get healthcare without insurance, although it might be more difficult to do so if you are not well-off, do not have access to other resources (community, etc.), or are not in an emergency situation where you are automatically given care.

Jeez.... An article by an American doctor - writing for a right-wing think tank - who is against publicly-provided health care. What a shocker.

And Quebec was not the largest and most affluent province in Canada 40-odd years ago.

Zero credibility.

Well, it would stand to reason that a person opposed to publicly-provided healthcare would write against it. What do you think of what the article says apart from its bias?

The system isn't about to collapse, although people have been fretting about it for as long as I can remembeer. Creeping privatisation hasn't been a panacea, given that that's what's been happening in Canadian healthcare for some time now.

The American system is better at providing timely octuple bypasses to the elderly, while the Canadian one remains better at providing preventative health care for everyone, at a lower cost expressed as percentage of GDP, while Canadian life expectancy is equal to or better than that of the US.

Good call. I don't like it when people disseminate bad information like this. There will be a lot of Americans who will believe it. Given a choice I would take Canada's healthcare any day of the week.

It does seem that the author of the article read way too much into Castonguay's words, and took it somewhere that was not intended, but do you agree that there are legitimate criticisms of Canadian healthcare in the examples cited?

There are legitimate criticisms of Canada's system. I'm old enough to remember when I was a child and things were pretty good. Most people had a family doctor and wait times weren't like they are today. To say Canada's health care is in ruin is a scare tactic that is an outright lie. Successive governments have taken a lot of money out of health care and Doctors are being sought by many countries, but I wouldn't trade our system for the American system ever. I recently had a foray into the health care system. On sunday I was in emergency, had a procedure done and was out within two hours. I needed a cat scan and was in within three days. That even surprised me. My only complaint is that I can't get a family Doctor.

I probably do come off as sounding a bit...pompous?

It's interesting how the interwebs affect one's manner of speaking. IRL I am rarely this polite.
