Good thing Hitler was a total idiot or this ship could have made a difference in the Battle of the Atlantic.

   

There's all you needed to say right there.

   

I read this a few days ago and I gotta admit, I never knew Germany built a carrier. I guess it's one more area in which they were ahead of their time, but too witless to realise the potential.

And Bootlegga, you're totally right, it would have made a big difference. Though, I suspect had it become too big a problem, it would have got the Bismarck treatment.

   

I don't remember from my history class in HS if the Nazi air craft carrier was ever mentioned. It's been so long too and I really didn't pay attention much too. But that's interesting...

   

   

The stupidity of others allowed him to do it. Hitler was a public speaker, he was a genius in the way that he got elected, but after that, he showed how stupid he really was.

The Graf zeppelin aircraft carrier.. was to carry modified Stuka JU87 bombers and a sea version of the BF 109 E... but plans were put on hold ans eventually the boat was scuttled by the zazis

   

Because dumber people were running Britain, Canada, and France at the time.

   

The reason he took over most of Europe and parts of Asia and Africa was because he was surrounded by plenty of smart people, who developed strategies/tactics.

Okay, he wasn't necessarily an idiot, but he definitely was an egomaniac who thought HE knew what was best, not the professionals around him (from economists to generals) and made plenty of bad decisions.

Those idiotic decisions (declaring war on the US first, Stalingrad, insisting the Me-262 be a bomber and not a fighter are three huge ones), is why most people think he was an idiot.

Feel free to disagree, but I stand by my statement, he was a total idiot.

   

There was no end of idiots like IceOwl around back then who wanted to do 'anything' to avoid war even if it meant giving away other people's countries without a fight as in the case of Czechoslovakia.

These short-sighted fools did not see then and they do not see now that appeasing or negotiating with self-serving barbarians only emboldens those types of people to demand more and more until they believe that their victims lack the will to defend themselves.

Then, like wolves, they attack.

But some people will never learn these valuable lessons and they will be the very example of those whom George Satayana wrote about.
