I appreciate the effort to want to make it something special, but isn't it cheaper to mass produce those things, instead of make them unique?
I guess no one care about money eh...
Hasn't the Olympic medals stayed the same for decades or does the medals differ from game to game? If they have stayed the same, why change it now and possibly insult past winners.
Also I was a bit miffed the medals unfortunately were following the same theme as everything else in the Olympics and that was the Aboriginal design. When I think of B.C., Aboriginals are not the only people who come to mind. But when it comes to the 2010 olympics, it's all about greasing the most squeaky wheel. How about a railroad building scene next time with people from China? How about 3 different designed medals, one that is Aboriginal and two that represents something else entirely different.
At least with a unqiuely designed medal from 2010, it'll make it easier to track one down on Ebay after the games are over.

Cool. I'm pretty sure each Olympics uses a unique Design, but they usually have a standard Design amongst the Medals. I like this idea, makes each Medal more valuable because it is unique amongst its' own fellow Olympics Medals.

No, the medals are designed different for every summer and winter games. As for the Aboriginal stuff. The Architects of the games just went with a theme. Everything was designed around that theme. No matter what theme the designers came up with I am sure people would find a reason to bitch about it. It is just a theme nothing more.
Making the medals individual is a great idea as far as I am concerned.
I like the fact they say that these medals include recycled gold, recovered from electronic components and such... like recovered gold is somehow less valuable or expensive as mined gold.

So now the nates and the treehuggers are happy.
Wait til they try to go home and they ding them HST on their medals to make El Gordo happy.
The games are millions over in their budgetting, but eh, they now have shiny new medals so it's all ok.
I like the new medals. I think they're pretty. Distinct to Canada, and more importantly, BC, unlike that ugly, Ontario authorized, Eskimo, pile of rocks, symbol. The medals are a Hell of a lot better than those Japanese anime mascots, or the cheapo, made-in-China, pyjama uniforms of the last summer Olympics.
I like that the medals are distinct for each athlete. It makes ours even more special.
I think we're starting to get it. I like our uniforms for this Olympics too.
Maybe the medals are a little too large, but it's a minor bitch.
Athletes were petitioned and they specifically said, when asked about medals, that they waned them "big and heavy." They get what they want.

Well, I did say "maybe", but that sounds interesting. Would you have a link? I'd like to read about that.

Every athlete who ascends the podium during the 2010 Games will take home a unique medal, said Olympic organizers Thursday morning during a medal unveiling at the Athletes’ Village.
The design of each of 1,014 gold, silver or bronze medals is taken from hand-cropped sections of two large works of West Coast art — an orca for the Olympics, a raven for Paralympics.
It means the designs, by local artist/designer Corrine Hunt, could be roughly recreated — if someone had the time to arrange the medals like a precious-metal jigsaw.
“We wanted each piece to be completely unique,” said co-designer Omer Arbel. “We felt that, unlike other medals in other Games, it was important that each athlete take home a piece that was different than every other athlete.”
Each medallist will also receive a silk scarf with the original art so they can see where their medal fits in the overall design.
The medals are not flat, but gently undulated, “inspired by ocean waves.” The Olympic medals are 10 centimetres in diameter and are circular in shape, while their Paralympic cousins are squared circles.
At more than half a kilogram each, they are among the heaviest medals in Olympic history.
“I thought there was no way we’d be able to replicate it,” said Stephane Ouellette, a machinist at the Royal Canadian Mint.
VANOC executive vice-president Dave Cobb said the medals were created over a two-year period and in consultation with athletes, who wanted something that was unique from other Games, uniquely Canadian and simply “big and heavy.”

Make one out of lead for finishing in last place....
