Not good... I understand their frustration but...

   

Its the Unions fault they are closing in the first place

   

I wonder how bad it would be if my upper management father and the rest of us was still living in Blue collar southern Whitby after this closing...sheesh. (He works at GMAC, but I bet the distinction wouldn't be made)

Maybe, but I think it has more to do with them producing vehicles that people don't want anymore.

   

Trucks are actually still selling quite well, SUV's on the other hand are starting to be refused as trade-ins by some dealers as they aren't selling. In the end, it's all about money. Trucks can be made in Mexico and the southern US cheaper then they can be made here.

   

I think that's changing fast. Last year I would have agreed with you, especially around Prince George. Now though the dealerships are really pushing the trucks on people but they are staying on the lot's for a long time.

   

The statement about trucks and SUV's was made just the other day. In Kingston a friend of mine is trying to trade his 1998? Jeep Cherokee in for a truck and was offered half the trade in value from the dealer, than an offer the dealer made just last month to him. (That deal fell through)

SUV's right now aren't worth the money most people owe on them.

   

this is one of the issues with big unions AND one of the reasons why Canadian made cars are CHEAPER when sold in the US than in Canada.

UAW is it's own worse enemy

   

Agreed. The UAW has to let go its lazier members and not protect them. Even then, I am sure that won't be enough. Protect the jobs that they need and ensure they get good wages.

Or try to infiltrate the Japanese and Korean automakers which aren't unionized. But they are smart and put the factories in the Southern US.

   

you can be as angry as you want but it the union cannot pay you, and turning a wrench that pays 20 bucks an hour with benefits,,, i say this take the package and get educated you bunch of lazy unionized dumb asses... starve......

   

when the plant closes down,,, there is no union that can bring the life blood into, people working for 20 bucks an hour turing wrenches.... its going south to cheaper work forces... go fuckkin cry....

   

trucks are not selling and suv's if people are stupid are buying... go grab the lost oil...

   

This is hardly centered solely on the union - it has to do more with the current market, the economy and the U.S. housing crisis (see Martin in the Post). Perhaps instead of promulgating your ignorance you should practice what you preach and get an education.

   

I think unions are a big disadvantage for US automakers and it likely explains the move to areas without a union traditions. As a consumer I want GM to make trucks as cheap a spossible; I think it's good for Canada's ecconomy to import cheap vehicles.

There will continue to be small business demand for trucks, I would like to see trucks with better suspenions lower ride hieght and fewer exstened cabs, I think there will alwasy be dmenad for these vehicles.
