I nearly got hit by a hybrid speeding out of a back alley not too long ago because I didn't hear the careless idiot coming. It's not just blind people, it's regular old pedestrians at blind corners too!

RUEZ @ Thu Jun 26, 2008 5:05 pm

I think the article would be better titled, careless driving could pose risk for blind pedestrians. A driver shouldn't have to rely on the noise from his engine to scare off potential victims.

Blind folks aren't being run over by bicycle couriers,
not many that I've heard, anyway.
So let's equip the wee hybrid cars with
ka-ching bells or bulb-horns...yes ? 8O

What this article written by the Oil lobbyist? "Those mean little hybrids are dangerous to us all, they are terrorist on wheels."

Moose whistles on your hood for the blind?

martin14 @ Thu Jun 26, 2008 11:16 pm

so, in the interests of saving the environment,

i propose we kill all the blind people.

;)

failing that, we should install a gas engine to make the proper noise
so that we can save the blind people....

It's the same argument a lot of overcompensating motorcyclists already use - they have to have the engine tuned loud so that people hear them coming, instead of just driving responsibly.

get a bike and try it.. see what happens when you have a nice quiet engine.
We all have dead friends from the "but i didnt see him" asshole.

loud pipes save lives.

p.s. 95% of the time in car vs bike, its not the motorcyclist drving irresponsibly.
its the idiot in the cage.

Ah, a resident genius pipes up. No, you need to learn how to drive responsibly, and that includes looking out for pedestrians. Being loud is just obnoxious and unnecessary.

A friend of mine has a bike, and he put louder pipes on it right away. When I asked him why he said so drivers would hear him. I don't like loud noise either, I really don't like Harley's when they go by, bu I can understand why my friend did it. If you are on a two lane road and you pull up closer to a car he's gonna know someone is near him and more than likely won't pull into your lane. I would say in most cases Motorcycle riders are better drivers just because they are always watching out for cars that aren't paying attention to them.

ridenrain @ Fri Jun 27, 2008 8:57 am

Loud pipes are nothing more than a childish cry for attention, and to pretend they are a safety feature is ignorant. Horns are louder and more recognizeable than pipes so why don't you ride around with you're horn on all the time?
Why not? Because the sound is iritating..
Just maybe that's what some people think of you're loud pipes too?

Obviously hybrids need boom boxes with crappy music.

thank you Ruez.

Roman, you are an idiot.. i wasnt talking about bike vs pedestrian. I sincerely hope you dont have a driver's license.

We could all ways install a loud speaker that blairs a "vroom vroom" sound.

Any one know the name of the little frog that does the race car sound, if so we could use that.
