Was that yesterday's paper? I didn't read that.

There's a difference between outing rioters, expressing your disgust at them and writing a letter to their employer. That's all good. Physical threats and harassment aren't. As has been pointed out, there is just as much of a mob mentality playing out in the "get the rioters" crowd as there was with the rioters. Just like the rioters there is a small group of instigators who go over line. And, I wouldn't be at all surprised of some of the most vigorous people expressing their outrage now were at the riot, didn't disperse when told to and possibly even participated.

Today's Vancouver Sun.

I'm with you 100% on threats or harassment. Out them, make them pay the public price, ridicule them (petty but surprisingly satisfying). Anyone threatening, harassing or undertaking a physical vengeance should be hunted down.

I'm not buying the "the online mob is just as bad as the rioters" argument though. I'm venting. I outed Alex Pro to his sponsors. To say that doing that is morally equivalent to looting, burning, beating strangers and attacking police officers is ludicrous.

Well, I think I summarily destroyed your argument. Thanks for showing up though. Now rep me, apologize then fuck off.

You could out Tim Thomas as being the main cause of all the destruction but I don't think he really cares.

That is all.

Today, we’ve reached a new stage, one that speaks to our time. We’re now seeing outrage over the outrage.

Thankfully, many people are urging a halt to the online vigilantism. The mob mentality that we’ve seen on display in the past few days has rivalled every bit the mob mentality that overcame thousands of people on a warm June evening last week.

I don’t know what this says about us. I do know that I’ve been dismayed by the level of anger, even genuine hatred, out there. And I know, too, that a civil society can’t be led by the instincts or inclinations of an enraged horde, even if it thinks it’s on the right side of what’s fair and just......

At some point, calm must prevail. Reason must supersede raw emotion. Rationality must trump the rabble’s knee-jerk cries demanding frontier justice. As a society, we must be better than both the mob that rioted last week and the mob calling for the heads of everyone who took part in it.

This is not about making excuses for anyone’s behaviour or letting them off the hook in any way. It’s about not being ruled by odium and loathing but rather intelligence and reason.

Yeah, we have the courts for letting them off the hook.

If someone who was 'outed' gets their house burnt, or gets
beat up in the street, then maybe the whining pussies have a point.

Until that, ( and it hasnt happened ), its just a bunch of whining pussies.

Now where do I start?

See, you've got nothing.

I supported Zip writing to employers, and long ago called for public shaming of the rioters (and supportive bystanders) - that it would be more effective than our criminal justice system. I even mentioned stocks and cleaning public toilets for those convicted before that showed up in letters to the editor.

And yet you wrote

$1:
And you're a typical reactionary, hang em high before we even have the evidence. He's talking about convicting people before they are found guilty, not police operations. I don't know what it is with you right wingers who seem to want to do away with the court system and go back to vigilante justice. Until it involves you or someone you care about of course

That's why you are constanty taken to task. Hy-po-crite...

Public shaming is convicting people before they are found guilty. The shamer takes the evidence they find, and if they conclude in their mind that the evidence is strong enough - guilty. Same with writing to employers.

You are as guilty as anyone else here for being a hang 'em high reactionary though you are incapable of displaying the personal accountability to admit it.

Double double, by the way and make sure the coffee is less than 20 minutes old, Andy.

I wouldn't be in that platoon. I'm sure the hive mind is strong in the military. We can see it playing out right now. An accusation with no back up, then people piling on with empty words.

I'm curious what your reaction would be if ten posters suddenly appeared supporting your position.

Hypocrite.

Again you post the same drivel without in the least addressing the point I raised, which indicates that you really don't have much of an argument at all.

The question I asked is: How is venting online or writing to sponsors of Alex Pro morally equivalent to looting, burning, beating strangers and attacking police officers? I mean, I hear it claimed all the time by all the usual suspects in the print media. But they never provide any justification for their claim either. I can see the comparison (anonymous rampage) but not the equivalence. And you just keep restating this claim all over again, without addressing the root question. Stating something over and over again is a good propaganda tool, but a poor logical argument.

At this point you're wandering around the ring and picking up your teeth like little broken Chiclets. Best thing you could do is just stay down.

Maybe I just stay pissed off longer than you. I'm starting to settle down a little now, but still, all in all, pretty pissed.

Indeed. When the topic has been global warming I don't recall that Andy ever had a problem with the much-vaunted consensus.

Good point.
