Gourdel a 55-year-old mountaineering guide from Nice was seized in the Djura Djura mountains of northern Algeria on Sunday during a hiking trip.
Easy, stay the hell away from a long list of countries.

These fucking retards took Fijians as hostages. The GDP of Fiji isn't as much as the airfare to bring them home FFS. What do they want - the ransom in coconuts?
Time to start arming those planes with jellied pork-fat napalm substitute...

I never understood the Muslim (or Jewish) aversion to pork because it's "unclean", yet they'll eat chicken like it's going out of style. ![huh? [huh]](./images/smilies/icon_scratch.gif)

In Judeism, mammals must have cloven feet and chew their cud. Pigs chew their cud but do not have cloven feet.
Leviticus 11:3
There are 24 birds listed in the Torah as inedible, basically birds of prey and scavengers, all the rest can be eaten.
In Islam, it is these verses:
Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked a name other than that of Allah. [Al-Qur'an 5:3]
In Islam, the birds that are Haram are also the birds of prey and scavengers.

Pigs are evil.
Cloven hoof, but don't chew cud.
Evil, evil, evil.
It's probably more a public health issue of 2 thousand years ago.

Yeah, and yet locusts are considered kosher and certain types of grasshoppers are Halal. Different folks, different strokes.
I think you are right though Martin that it probably has more to do with the difficulty of keeping pork from making you sick in desert climates.
If it's not cooled or salted, you don't have much time to eat it before it would make you sick.

That certainly makes sense. But really, chicken isn't much better when you think about it. It spoils pretty damn quickly at "room temp" and if you're looking for a more pest riddled, bug infested, "normal" food animal, there's precious few worse than chicken.
This is kind of leading to an unintended discussion but I find the whole fish thing really curious. Spoils really quick at "room temp" like pork or chicken but sun-dried fish can be safe to eat. Sun dried chicken or pork, not so much

That's true but a chicken is a one meal type of thing. A 200lb pig would only be useful for a huge banquet or something.

Yeah true. Kill two chickens, you have dinner for 4-6. While a 145lb pig carcass gives between 100-110lbs of meat. So yeah, even in 8oz portions that's still enough food for 200 people or so.

I am seriously getting more and more perplexed by the math involved in this ISIS crisis.
In today's Washington post I read that 60+ nations have now signed on to the coalition.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/chec ... are-doing/
The list includes all the members of the G8 except Russia and a mishmash of other nations. The combined population of the members who have pledged support is in the billions. The combined active professional military personnel of the forces is in the millions. The combined military expenditures is in the trillions.
Now could someone please explain to me why we have Admiral Kirby telling us that it is going to take years to fight this force of 50,000 rebel terrorists ?
Rear Adm John Kirby: IS fight 'will take years'
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-29337495
I mean really? Years ? For this force ? I get that no one wants to put boots on the ground but can a group with the population of Port Coquitlam really keep the world at bay for years ?
Are they planning on killing one a day ? I honestly just don't get that and I hope to God we are not tied down in another one of these clusterfucks for years.
I just feel like they are trying to bomb the crap out of an ideology that was born out of us bombing the crap out of ideologies and I see no military way out once we get sucked in.
I know there are clear difficulties in fighting insurgency warfare but from my understanding this is more of an open conflict than was Iraq.
Does it seem off to anyone else ?
Apparently, these beheadings are soliciting the correct response from the West from the Jihadist point of view. Maybe, we need to stop following their play book. The media attention and perhaps our military responses are sucking us in to their game.

Rear Adm John Kirby: IS fight
Because we aren't allowed to just nuke the whole area, for all the civilians they
are hiding behind.
Too bad, we could have the whole thing cleaned up in a week.
Should help recruiting for ISIS though.

No. It's about right. Look at Israel/Palestine. The fight will be generational, and the only path to victory is if the generation currently born isn't born into the hate that ISIS uses as a tool. ISIS could be eliminated quickly, but what they stand for cannot.
Then when the current children are old enough to lead, there is a chance that they will lead based on what is best for society, not what is based on hate and lies.
