Layton stepping aside as he battles new cancer

NDP Leader Jack Layton announces he has a new cancer and will take a leave as leader of NDP during a press conference in Toronto on Monday, July 25, 2011.

He has lost some weight since the election and certainly sounded like he aged 20 years, not to mention his skin pigment has changed to a slight yellow.... it is unfortunate that he has to face this yet again, but my hats off to him. Regardless of other people's views of his politcal views and his party, he has battled through a lot to get where he is, he has always come off to me as someone devoted to his job, those he represents and one of the few "Good Politicians" in recent years.

Flawed, yes.... everybody is, but he's been unique amongst most of the others, when it comes to character and his focus on his job.

And my hats off to the other party leaders for their support.

"I moved to Australia from Nova Scotia back in Jan. and for some reason I was not able to vote in the last election. If I could, I certainly would have continued to support the NDP and I am glad to see that you and the party made great strides to get where you are today in the government, even without my vote and even through all the trials you have been facing during that time.

Having a number of family members who've battled through Cancer and my father-in-law passing away no more than a month after the wedding from mesothelioma from work-related issues in the past, I know how much of a struggle and how difficult it is to face such a thing as cancer, for both the individual and their families. My hat is off to you for your accomplishments and your determination during your last fight. You have inspired many people with your optimism and your spirit, just as you continue to do today. Regardless of other people's views of your & the NDP's politcal views, nobody can dispute how hard you have worked to get where you are today, you have always come off to me as someone devoted to his job, those he represents and one of the few "Good Politicians" in recent years who never seemed to be one of those who are just there for themselves or their party.... but for the people which our government is supposed to be about.

Take your time, spend your energy on this new battle, spend it with your firends and family and do your best not to focus too much on the job. I'm sure there will be plenty to focus on when you get back.

No ammount of words can do justice in this time, but keep in mind that thousands of people & more, from all political backgrounds, within and without the nation of Canada are rooting for you at this time and focusing their prayers, wishes, hopes and karma your way for a positive end to this chapter you are going through in your book of life.

Looking forward to seeing you back in Parliament, sticking it to the other guys and making sure they're kept in check."

I wish him all the best. He's the best asset to the NDP and unfortunately, he doesn't look so good these days. Get well, Jack!

Yeah, I hope he beats it, but based on that video, he's in for the fight of his life. I may not agree with his politics, but cancer is a motherfucker who takes way too many good people too early.

My synopsis as well. I think the NDP rally cry will soon be, "For Jack!". This is going to be a real game changer.

Personally I don't like Jack Layton the politician/public persona, but having had friends and family suffer and die from cancer, I feel sorry for Jack Layton the victim. He's now fighting a two front war, with his prostate cancer and this new cancer. As Scape pointed out, his chances for survival don't look good. He will be remembered for making the NDP the official opposition, but it seems a Pyrrhic victory(I think the campaigning and exhaustion exacerbated things) for him personally.

   

I think Jack knew then that cancer would be his demise, and that he was doing his utmost, a valiant effort indeed, to bring in the NDP as the official opposition. His 'swan song' if you will. A fine legacy!

Regarding Jack's condition or his choice for Interim Leader, it wouldn't really be fair for me to comment, not the kind of politics I want to involve myself in. Many factors were weighed in and Nicole came to the top of his list.

There will be a caucus meeting tomorrow morning and we will all have a chance to discuss things amongst ourselves and chart a course for the coming weeks and months.

   

Real character is shown in times of duress. I have faith the NDP will do Jack proud, come what may.

   

I know I gave Layton a really hard time during the last election, which I have no regret for doing, but this is something genuinely awful to happen to him and to his family. There's people in my family too, including my father, who also passed away from prostate cancer spreading into other places so I know how bad this probably will end up for him. All I can do is offer whatever prayer and sympathy I can give and, as a minimum, congratulate him for being a fighter and for putting a party that was basically written off not too long ago onto a much higher level. Good on him for living a life of some fairly significant accomplishments.
