The first two vehicles of the convoy passed and the taxi driver figured that was it and pulled out. Simple human error.

Negative, believe me, the highway where this occured I know well, there is no mistaking how many vehicles are on the road, it is WIDE OPEN moonscape, particularily when we are dealing with LAV's and RG's, not exacly Volkswagon Golfs.
As for driving closer together, well I am sure you have heard of this ongoing problem we are facing over there that does not worry us during our commute to work here in Canada, it's called IED's.
By tailgating one another and striking an IED, you invite casulties to both or all vehicles, rather than just one.
So read the reports. They passed two vehicles then pulled out in front of the third.
It makes no sense that a allah/god fearing human pulls out in knowing that he will suffer catistrophic damage unless he thinks the coast is clear.
I am not blaming the Canadians, I am just logically thinking of how our boys could have ended up in this mess.

The situation being the one in Afghanistan. I fail to see how that supports the notion that these 'urges' to kill Canadians put us at any more risk than before.
