It's also sad that sometimes people feel they have to record things in order to be sure of just consequences. I've never felt I needed to protect myself from my co-workers.
If you've never felt that way then you're one of the few lucky ones. IMO the workplace, with it's runaway epidemic of bullying and backstabbing, is one of the best illustrations of the rapidly degrading condition of humanity.
Emails are also a good back up, if you think you're getting thrown under the bus forward work emails to your personal email.

The vast majority of folks I worked with were great. There was a handful though that made life a living hell with their dirty tricks, cruelty, and cheap shots. As someone who is unfortunately oriented towards the negative I've found dealing with these types to be absolutely devastating to the point where they sucked all the fun out of work in general and to where they affected/afflicted the rest of my life too.
god must really love these kinds of people given that he's made so many of them.

I understand why she felt she had to do it but is nobody troubled by this at all?
Yes, I am very troubled that the University thinks any discussion can be 'toxic'; that there is even a debate about standard English pronouns, and that there is even a debate in University about allowing free thought.
God dammit someone +5 for me.

I've worked in environments like that. $65/h was not enough, only lasted 18 months there.
In my current environment today alone; I wrote an application for a co-worker for a company award for outstanding corporate values and technical leadership for my team lead, and two other co-workers wrote to my team lead, his boss and his boss regarding my performance on a project.

And we got told our year end performance bonuses will be 4 digits (to the left of the decimal point), and the company booked us a Christmas lunch next week at Pampas Steak House.
I'd almost wore here for minimum wage!

One creepy aspect of this story is that she surreptitiously recorded these people without their knowledge, something that is becoming all too common.
I applaud Lindsay Shepherd for having the foresight to record what amounted to an inquisition by 3 Professors. You might learn something by listening to the recording.

Wilfrid Laurier graduate student delivers a wake-up call$1:
If you want to understand the intellectual corruption that is eating away at our universities, listen to an audio recording made by a graduate student named Lindsay Shepherd. She is a 22-year-old teaching assistant at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. Every senior administrator and every governor at every campus in the country should listen to it and ask themselves how far the rot has spread.
Ms. Shepherd is doing a master's degree in cultural analysis and social theory. Two weeks ago, she was summoned for a reprimand after a student, or students, complained about offensive material she had introduced in class. She decided to record the meeting on her computer instead of taking notes. Afterward, she took her story to the media, where it hit the headlines. She didn't think about releasing the recording until Global News learned that it existed and asked her for it. It broadcast an abridged version, which went viral. The reaction was widespread shock. Now, the university has a full-blown crisis on its hands.

Christie Blatchford: Here's where Laurier can stick their apology to Lindsay Shepherd$1:
Wilfrid Laurier University teaching assistant Lindsay Shepherd is undoubtedly a better human being than I am — and at 22, probably a more mature one — and may well accept the raft of apologies now coming her way, but I would tell them all to blow the mea culpas out their various bums.
Shepherd is the 22-year-old graduate student at the school who was recently subjected to a struggle-session-like interrogation by three administrators, declared to be “transphobic” and then sanctioned for having shown a class a short video snippet, from TVO’s The Agenda, which featured the controversial University of Toronto psychology professor Dr. Jordan Peterson talking about the faddish new un-pronouns such as “zie” and “zher.”
Shepherd’s supervising professor, Nathan Rambukkana, even told Shepherd that by showing the video clip neutrally, without the now-requisite denunciation of Peterson, it was basically akin to “neutrally playing a speech by Hitler …”

She was defending herself in a Kangaroo court type setting. If you're the one being attacked in something like that and you're not taping it you're an idiot.

If she hadn't recorded it it would just be her word against theirs. The moment the recording got out the university and the people who tried to bully and intimidated her had to apologize.
In the meeting, Ms. Shepherd is confronted by three superiors who bully her, ignore her version of the story and attempt to intimidate her with veiled accusations. At times, she is reduced to tears. The power imbalance is extreme. The resemblance to a Maoist struggle session – where party zealots gang up on a wrong-thinker and try to force her to confess the error of her ways – is painful.https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion ... e37033031/

Not really. If constant recording is the price of stopping abuse then so be it. Criminals and bullies aren't going to stop their behaviour by appealing to them on a moral level because they have no moral core to appeal to at all. If a recording is what ends up putting a halt to them then that's just the way it is.
Say you work in a hospital. What wouldn't you record?

I generally wouldn't record without suspicion of something bad happening. I'm not some paranoiac endorsing an all-surveillance all-the-time society. I'm also not throwing out using surveillance as an effective tool in catching or embarrassing the hell out of the bad guys. It's not an either/or situation.
That being said, recording all meetings with a public authority, whether its an interaction with the police, an audit with the tax people, or a closed-door meeting between a student and university department personnel, should absolutely be a right for the protection of the individual. It's in the best interest of the authorities anyway because if they stay on the level and are respectful then they don't get tagged with being bureaucratic bullies when a recorded incident gets made public by the press.

Been there. All it takes is that one person to make a work environment toxic as they draw others into their clique. I still sort of wish I'd done more to defend myself but at the time odds were stacked against me. You can't fight a bully unless you bring your own standards down to their pathetic level and I wouldn't do that. It was easier to quit the job and move on.

That line is moving rapidly towards ever more disclosure. It's her work as a TA, not as a student, that is under debate here. Are no there regulations governing the recording of university colleagues?
