I have one simple question:
With the fixed election dates brought in by the current government, which is shceduled to begin in Oct 2009, does this mean that we will have another election next year?
Having said that should we not get rid of confidence votes and make our politicians play nice together to run the country? So we can have some stability and not a threat every 6 weeks of a snap election?
The only bad thing is that someone would actually have to listen to Taliban Jack and the rest of the "Special Interest" groups.

well thing is new law of fixed dates doesn't apply in a minority situation , opposition can bring government down and force an election at any time .
but i do agree the constent threat of any election is geting rather rediclous and maybe makign the minority less productive i suspect .
From what the article says of the NDP strategy this is more about political opportunism than statesmanship----sounds like a LIBRANO tactic.

but what does the ndp have to gain ? there not doing good in polls and have some troubles with the increased green vote on the left .
so what they won 1 seat in quebec they have no hope of winning any other steats there .
Their probably getting nervous because the party that brought Canada into Afghanistan is now backing out, and that's taking a slice out of the NDP's pie.
dont think so... the NDP and the Bloc want to bring Harper down... so as soon as .. and it might be February that mr fuckup brings down the budget they will table a non confidence motion... funny thing is no body had any confidence in Harper since the last election... please God make it soon
The NDP and Bloc have nothing to lose and while the liberals are weak and disorganized, everything to gain. A number of pundits have noted that the Libs are moving farther into Trudeaupian left because Harper is dominating the center. That squeezes poor Jack out and he dosen't like that.
You can always move to France..
I'm hoping for an election soon, so that I can help get a con majority, so that we can commit to being in A-stan as long as neccisary.
Later on I may change my vote based on if the economy tanks and we go into a deficit. If the government can avoid a deficit and/or purchase a substantial portion of military equipment, then they'll keep my vote wherever I go.

that might be part of the problem for them , do agree liberals have been trying to move into the left but its a very crowded area with various parties looking for votes .
the ndp sort of finds itself being in an akward position i'd say .
if you think that the tories are going to get a majority... good fucking luck..ontario will never support them.. and they are losing ground that they made in Quebec.. and they pissed all over Newfoundland and the eastern provinces... nice piple dream you are having there...
and why would I move to france? I am 100% canadian...

No. The next would be in October 2012. Every election would hypothetically be scheduled for October of the 4th calendar year after the last election, whether or not it was scheduled.

Absolutely not. Our parliamentary system is completely based on the requirement that governments maintain the confidence of the elected chamber. What happens, for instance, if a budget doesn't pass? Should the government stop working for 4 years? A government cannot govern without the confidence of the house (and by extension the people). If it loses that, it must resign or go to the people.
Belgium is a good example of what happens if politicians are told they must play nice. They haven't had a government for months because there are too many parties and nobody likes anyone else.
