...and the NDP seizes the opportunity as the party that fought against the HST.
Classic.

This is a smart move by Layton. The BC Liberals have been getting all the flack for the HST, even tho the feds bribed BC with 1.7 bil to bring it in. Harper should wear some of this too, tho at leas he didn't lie to the voters of BC.
$1:
Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton wants the Harper government to put off implementation of the harmonized sales tax in British Columbia until a proposed provincial referendum on cancelling it has been held.
I thought Billy Woodenshoes and Ms James had to get 10% of every eligible BC voter in every riding signed up before a Referendum would be held.
Once again the NDP appears to be putting the cart before the horse. You can be assured that if the anti HST people (which is most of BC) fail to get the required number of signatures that Gordo won't be holding a referendum on the matter anytime soon.
But since I'm a betting man, if perchance we get a referendum and shoot down the HST, I'll lay 5 to 1 odds that, with no public consultation, our provincial sales tax will goe up by at least 2% and our provincial income tax by at least 1%.
When will Layton figure it out that no one in Canada listens to him or his party? He was doomed from the very beginning. He should join a monestary or something.

I actually had someone come to my door asking me for my signature on the petition. Since I am not on the voters list, I couldnt sign, but I sure as hell hope she will get the amount of signatures she needs.

Living in a place with no provincial sales tax owns!
The HST is not just a tax, its a classic way to dig deeper into the pockets of British Columbians, ie restructure something and then slip in a few more details that will rake in the dollars.
I support Layton's request.
I just find it funny that Layton leader of the "tax the crap out of everything party" is calling for a freeze on this.

I don't know about that. I have been living under Olivia Chow's reign of terror for 3 years now (Trinity-Spadina riding).
NDP has this place on lock down.
HST is here to stay. I hate it, but BC will feel Ontario's pain (sadly). Hopefully it won't molest its construction market.
