Good. Saruman needed to go.

Surely to be contested in the time-honoured South American tough-guy method of sending the thugs (the mentally-ill fanatics and the well-paid types as well) out into the streets to kill as many people as possible. And sure to be copied by a certain sort of person in the United States on November 8, 2022 and November 5, 2024.

"We can sure learn a lot of lessons from Bolso's boys, what a great job they're doing, am I right?" - Donnie Covfefe, in front of a large crowd of grassroots mouth-frothing folk

At the moment, Saruman says he doesn't plan to contest the result. Here's hoping he doesn't change his mind.

Perhaps there is hope for democracy.

The article notes how Bolsonaro is the first incumbent to lose a re-election bid in Brazilian politics since the 1990s. I remember how Lula was widely acclaimed for his drastically reducing Brazil's poverty rate. According to Wikipedia, he did that all while paying down the national debt, simplifying the tax system and modernizing the country's infrastructure. It sounds like he managed to improve peoples' lives with poverty-reducing initiatives while also taking actions that still pleased the business sector with his tax reforms and infrastructure spending.

The main thing I'd be worried about if I were Brazilian is not Lula's plans for when he takes office, but his health. He's in his late 70s and he's already had to be treated for throat cancer. Bolsonaro's no spring chicken himself, but he's got time on his side. He might not even need a coup to get rid of Lula if Lula has another health crisis.

The bigger problem is more what Bolsonaro does as a loser. He’s said he won’t contest the election results which is a good thing. A lot of people were worried he would seeing as he has the support of the military and police and could easily bring Brazil back to the bad old days with a military backed coup.

He said he wouldn't do a coup today. That doesn't mean he won't do one later. I'll be surprised if Lula survives (literally) to the end of next year.

Bolsonaro Makes Appearance, Still Has Yet To Concede

Brazil election: Bolsonaro thanks supporters, signals acceptance of loss to Lula

Good, he hasn't given up but he isn't pulling a Trump at least. Military and his major donors must have told him not to.

DrCaleb @ Tue Nov 01, 2022 4:22 pm

That is at least a good sign. It could have got right ugly down there if he decided to pull a Maduro.

Zipperfish @ Tue Nov 01, 2022 4:25 pm

It's a good sign. Bolsanaro looks like he's going to concede. Iran people are rising up. Russia is failing in its bid to take Ukraine and is looking weak to the rest of the world. Even Italy's "far-right" leader isn't looking all that far right.

These are good things.

The Iranian Government has reportedly raised the “Flag of Revenge” above the Shahcheragh Holy Shrine in the City of Shiraz, this is the exact same Flag raised on the days before the Iranian Missile Attack on the U.S Military’s Ayn al-Asad Airbase in Iraq.Image

Baby steps there Zip, baby steps.
