That is just horrible.

   

Not a big surprize sadly. While many Ukrainians fought the Germans, many also formed volunteer units within the SS and saw the Germans as liberators from the Russians. After the French, the Cossacks were the third largest ethnic group within the Waffen-SS and formed their own units. These men were not pressed into service either, they volunteered. Another sad fact of history is that many of the Jews in Germany had actually fled there from Russia and the Ukraine and the constant pogroms they experienced there. The Jews saw Germany (under the Weimar Administration) as a tolerant sanctuary an a beacon of hope.

   

It is kind of odd actually how the most prominent and respected people go from that to only a decade later being hauled off and are left to die in the gutters.

Many even fought in the Great War for their King and country.
