It would appear as though "WHAT THE FUCK!!!" is an international expression crossing many languages and cultural barriers.

Lebanese PM said those responsible will be held accountable. Thing is, if it was a guy fucking around on a forklift or an improperly secured load that fell or some dimwit having a smoke in the immediate area or just really crappy safety in the warehouse, they've already been held accountable in the most meta-fashion imaginable because they were probably atomized by the explosion. Seriously, anyone at the center of that blast can now be scooped up with a broom & dustpan because there will literally be nothing left of them but dust-sized particles. :|

Apparently the werehouse had 2700kg of Nitrate. The nitrite was sorted here for 9 years.

And now we see with that shockwave why Nitrates are used in things like anfo and terror bombs.

The shockwave is comparatively long, and does far more damage than other forms of explosions. :( Also why Nitrates are not stored in large open piles, but small protected packages.

It's going to be a major disaster. R=EM

I meant 2700 tonnes, and apparently the Nitrate was seized from a Moldavian flagged vessel in 2013. The ship the Nitrate was on was declared unfit to sail and the crew was forced to remain aboard for a year before a Judge allowed them to go back to the Ukraine. The Ships owner is in hiding.

Looks like Beirut may have a grain shortage in the short term. :(

According to news reports I heard yeerday, Lebanon was already facing food shortages. The destruction of the port and grain silo will make it worse.

Hopefully Canada will offer up some aid soon.

And now a housing shortage. 300,000 lost their homes in an instant yesterday.

Here’s a pic from how the AN was being stored in Beirut. There’s still going have to be investigation as to what set it off, but easy to see why that storage facility had been reported numerous times for lack of safety the last few years.

"What could go wrong?" they said.

I bet someone’s last words there were, “ eh. It’ll be fine. “

Lebanon puts port officials under house arrest, declares state of emergency after explosion
