Native issues in government is a hot potato. No one juristion is geared toward dealing with it and no one level of government be that federal, provincial or municipal wants the burden of responsibility so we get endless buck passing that ends up creating Caledonia's, Oka, Ipperwashes et al. It's not like the mayor of Oka woke up one morning and thought,"Gee, how can I fuck the natives out of their land and get people killed?" There was a legitimate business interest that wanted that land as a golf course, the same interest that wanted Bear mountain here in BC. While the government did sign and are thus responsible for the treaties signed Canada is no longer a colony of Britain and we are not at war with the US so the reasons for land claims have a different complexion to them. Ultimately standoffs like Caledonia will only serve to give the 1st Nations a black eye and a lesson that some battles should not be fought but I doubt that will happen before we get a few dead on either side of the barricades. The aftermath of that will be on par with the current situation in Israel and Palestine. I hope cooler heads will prevail so that goodwill can be once again created and agreements broached but from what I witnessed thus far I'm not holding my breath. I'll be dammed if I'm gonna show up for Oka II.

   

Next in line will be Redwood Meadows just outside of Calgary and near Bragg Creek . i think the people who built homes there were all foolish because one day the natives are going to come down on them too .

   

Maybe that was an attempt at sarcasm that failed but I doubt it, the reason they were up here is that they were studying the situation as part of a job excersise. In cooperation with Canadian officials... read that word again cooperation.

Unless you have a problem with Americans coming up here, you should lay off of the racism redneck accusations you've been hurling around.

If you know some history and a few actual facts on the subject you would see that my points are pretty clear and not racist at all.

Donny...Is that all you know? Land claims and treaty rights? Do you live in a bubble that is isolated from everything else? The world has far bigger problems than your hand out demanding what you think you are entitled to. I am sick and tired of being told that I owe someone a livelihood because some British idiot tried to be nice and negotiate rather than wipe out. You owe your very existance to the very people that you, so obviously, hate. The British could have wiped out all the natives in Canada but they didn't.

Now I know that you are going to come back and say that we (Non-natives) owe you for our very existance but I don't buy into the "I am native so I am better and you owe me" line of bullshit!
