Disgraced former Mountie Benjamin (Monty) Robinson has been given a 12-month conditional sentence for obstruction of justice relating to a fatal collision with a motorcycle in Delta, B.C., in 2008.
The sentence means Robinson, 42, will not serve any time in jail. He will have to spend one month under house arrest and the rest of the time he will be under the supervision of a probation officer and subject to a curfew at night.
Justice Janice Dillon also ordered Robinson to write an apology to the family of Orion Hutchinson, who was killed in the crash, and pay a $1,000 fine to Victim Services.
At the sentencing hearing, Robinson never apologized or expressed remorse for leaving Hutchinson dead or dying on the road while he went home to drink.
But Dillon also noted that when she handed down the sentence she had to consider the fact Robinson was a first time offender, an alcoholic and an aboriginal man.

I'm always hearing about how police forces in this country have such high standards their recruits. How does a loser like this make the cut?

That's what I don't get... by doing stuff like this, you're lowering the standards they should live by.

At Ontario Police College, the First Nation's police students don't have to pass the fitness tests or the academic tests to graduate. The non-First Nations students do. This has been going on for decades.

According to the article both men were drinking but being a cop means that he is a little more equal in the eyes of the justice system and being native didn't hurt either I'm sure!

But in fairness to the drunken Indian stereotype, there's a Global TV reporter out here who abused a kid for 7 years and his lawyer managed to get a shrink to say he was just immature and wasn't a pedophile, just so he could ask for a conditional sentence.
If that happens it isn't just drunk natives getting off it's every fucking pervert criminal in BC to.

But our 'courts' have now decided that the fact that someone is aboriginal must be taken into consideration before a sentence is handed down. It's a passive form of racism, known as paternalism. OH we know you're native and not capable of doing better, so we can't hold your actions against you. Run along now. The crime doesn't matter, it's the fact that they are native.

I had a run-in with a native "officer" many years ago....I treated him like the joke he was after he tried to run me over with his truck and tell me "if I had my gun, everyone would be afraid of me".

Well, you can't say our justice system is inconsistent though when it comes to dealing with those who ruthlessly take away life from others.
It's just too bad they are consistently pathetic.

+5The truly sad part, this verdict doesn't surprise me, at all.
He'll walk from the perjury charge, they all will.
Have to wonder how much longer this joke of a system will continue,
before people start demanding real change.
