One of my wife's friends died this week and we just found out a little while ago.
Antonio "Tony" Marchini was a photographer in the 5th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron that flew out of Tinian during WW2. He was not involved in the attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima but instead worked on long range recon of isolated Japanese military bases starting in 1944.
By the end of the war his B-29 was being tasked to monitor Soviet naval movements that were threatening an invasion of Hokkaido, the northern most of the Japanese home islands. His B-29 came under fire from Soviet fighters a number of times until P-38 fighters started escorting the B-29 recon planes and shooting down the Soviet fighters. Tony had pictures of at least two of these shootdowns.
Tony moved from New York City to Sacramento after the war, married, and raised a family. He is survived by six children, fourteen grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Tony was 106 years old.

John J. Mooney, an inventor of the catalytic converter, the small and ubiquitous device that makes the engines that power everything from cars to lawn mowers less polluting and more fuel efficient, died on June 16 at his home in Wyckoff, N.J. He was 90.
The cause was complications of a stroke, his daughter Elizabeth Mooney Convery said.
Mr. Mooney was a high school graduate working as a clerk at a gas company when his colleagues encouraged him to pursue a college education. After earning a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees, he went on to receive 17 patents during his 43-year career with the Englehard Corporation in Iselin, N.J. (now the Catalyst Division of the German chemical manufacturer BASF).
Among them was the three-way catalytic converter, which has been described by the Society of Automotive Engineers as among the 10 most important innovations in the history of the automobile.

Charlie Daniels, who went from being an in-demand session musician to a staple of southern rock with his hit The Devil Went Down to Georgia, has died at 83.
A statement from his publicist said the Country Music Hall of Famer died Monday at a hospital in Hermitage, Tenn., after doctors said he had a stroke.
He had suffered what was described as a mild stroke in January 2010 and had a heart pacemaker implanted in 2013 but continued to perform.
Daniels, a singer, guitarist and fiddler, started out as a session musician, playing on sessions for albums, such as Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline and Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate. He also played on albums by Marty Robbins, Claude King, Flatt & Scruggs, Pete Seeger, Al Kooper and Ringo Starr.
Beginning with a self-titled release in 1970, Daniels embarked on his own career, with his five-piece band, touring endlessly, sometimes doing 250 shows a year.
"I can ask people where they are from, and if they say, 'Waukegan,' I can say I've played there. If they say, 'Baton Rouge,' I can say, 'I've played there.' There's not a city we haven't played in," Daniels said in 1998.
