We can get FOX News in Canada, why not Al-Jazeera?

poquas @ Fri Feb 20, 2009 9:48 pm

Can't we just ban Fox?

As nice as that would be, Rupert Murdoch still has the right to poison the airwaves as long as he has viewers.

Is that on the basic cable package because unless you 'order' it, I don't get it so...it really shouldn't be a problem or maybe I do have it but keep flipping over it because it is so uninteresting, I don't know.

I've looked at Al-Jazeera english website and seems to be more in 'tune' to the world than CNN so I don't see a problem with it unless it promotes terrorism.

he he he, you guys are funny :)

OK, here goes, cause I watch Al Jazeera fairly frequently;
CNN International is really boring, BBC World isnt really much better,
Euronews seems to be government propaganda half the time.

Some simple observations:

forget the sports, from a Canadian point of view, they dont have a clue.
weather.. meh, same as everyone else.

They do bring some interesting reports from the more 'forgotten' parts of the world, like Africa and South Asia, usually quite well done. You get a real picture
of just how lucky we really are living in the West.
But consider their center of the world in not in the West.

They have an unnatural obsession with Isreal and Gaza.

To be fair, they did have the only setup inside Gaza during the last raids,
but the pro Palestian rants have to be taken with a BIG grain of salt.

They also bring reports from the States, but showing the not so glamorous
side of living there; job cuts, food banks, health care problems, etc.
Last one I remember was during the election, they focused on a black neighborhood
maybe 3 miles from the White House; pretty depressing stuff.
Considering a lot of their basic audience gets their ideas of the US from
Baywatch, maybe not such a bad thing.

Overall, Al Jazeera is far more left than the CBC, and anyone who watches that
station needs to understand that before going in, and judge it accordingly.
They do bring on representatives from Israel frequently, what isnt mentioned in
the article is the types of leading and inflammatory questions that are asked.
Occasionally, rarely, they will take a shot at a Palestinian rep, but generally
they get a free pass most of the time.

I dont see Al-Qaida promos or anything like that, no anti Israeli commercials,
but I imagine the pro Israel lobby would be very unhappy to see AJ in Canada.
Al Jazeera Arabic is a completely different animal, and should not be permitted
to be broadcast in the West at all.

Yes you can move the Yemen and then you can have your ban and AJ at the same time.

$1:
The oil-rich leader is a U.S. ally but has suspended his country's low-level ties with Israel to protest the Gaza offensive and supports the Hamas leadership there

With that quote Canada will not allow this POS to broadcast here.

EyeBrock @ Sat Feb 21, 2009 7:22 am

Let them broadcast. Free speech seperates us from the majority of the Third World.

kenmore @ Sat Feb 21, 2009 8:19 am

roger-roger @ Sat Feb 21, 2009 8:26 am

 At least kenmore supports free speech... as long as it's Francaphone.

EyeBrock @ Sat Feb 21, 2009 8:30 am
