Just think after working all week long they can now buy a happy meal where they work.
Ont. minimum wage to rise to $8/hr on Feb. 1
Canadian Press
TORONTO — The fourth increase to Ontario's minimum wage since 2004 will take effect February 1st when the rate rises 25 cents, to $8 an hour.
The hourly rate was $6.85 when the Liberals took office in 2003 and was raised by 30 cents February 1st, 2004, then again by the same amount in 2005 and 2006.
The government had said the increase was phased in over a four-year period to allow Ontario business time to adjust and remain competitive.
Other minimum wage rates for students under the age of 18, liquor servers and hunting and fishing guides will also increase on February 1.
In November, a private member's bill to raise Ontario's minimum wage by $2.25, to $10 an hour, made it as far as a second reading in the Legislature.
Premier Dalton McGuinty said while he supported the idea of raising the minimum wage, he called the large increase impractical.
It should be at least 9$/hour....This is ridiculous.
What in hell is the point of raising the minimum wage? Unless other factors are increasing prices, there is no reason to. All it does is raise prices.
Exactly ! all it does is raise prices therefore it is the prices. there is no question that one of the reasons to have any government is to control prices and wages so I guess as backwards as they are that is what they are doing , "except" ,Human waste always flow downhill so there is no benefit to raising minimum wage when the day after the rise in minimum wage the prices will go up .
It is also diminishing the offer of jobs precisely to those working at that wage. When the government raises the minimum wage, it is only a political move because most people don't understand the bad side of doing that. Good for those who will keep their jobs, they will be able to buy another sandwich. But how much will lose their jobs or won't be able to find one now ?
I guess there's an election coming in Ontario ? They are doing the same thing here in Quebec and there will be elections on spring or fall.
The point you need to understand is that some jobs just don't worth 8$/h.
Anybody can work in a McDonalds or in a grocery store.
You are not supposed to work at the minimum wage all your life. That's why less than 0.5% of the workers earn the minimum wage and that 85% of them are students or young people in transition for another job or before they go back to school.
