Be fair, dawg. 24-hour cable full-spectrum-saturation frenzy news gets more correct than it does wrong. They really only screw up when reporting on war, terrorism, mass murders, election results, and Supreme Court decisions. With important stuff like Jodi Arias, Joren VanDer Sloot, and OJ Simpson they were usually bang-on.

Good post, Beaver. It's a tragedy no matter how you slice it, but the 24-hour "news" coverage gets ridiculous.

We're saddened by the event, we pity and empathize with the victims, we want the perpetrators identified and brought to justice, but the coverage, past a certain point, just gets vampirical. They're trying to suck everything they can out of it, and go to excessive lengths to do so. In the process they bludgeon us with inane details and "exclusives" that we have no need to know.

Not to worry guys. Everything is going to be all right. Justin is on the case.

So basically we just have to find the perp, or perps, pat them on their widdo heads, and go, "Ahhhh...poor widdo exkwooded bibbies."

Oh noes!

Somebody said that we should look at what is actually causing the problem instead of just dealing with results...

Blasphemy!

Isn't there a saying...ounce of prevention is a pound of cure...no bother, that was before my time.

I thought Chretien already solved the mystery of "the root" causes of terrorism.

After 9-11 didn't he say the cause could be traced back to the fact that we were rich so it was understandable how the poor would want to fly planes through buildings, or something. Justin has added to that I guess. Apparently terrorists also suffer from feelings of exclusion. Let's get on that one.

Maybe Justin's got the solution to the Chretien one - about the us being too rich thing, I mean.

I highly recommend that you watch the actual interview (vs Sun News Memes).

I thought the official Conservative talking point is that Chretien and Trudeau were the 20th and 21st hijackers and their quote to the media was "terrorism is awesome! I won't be happy until more innocents die."

You know every time there's a security-related tragedy, the Conservatives come out and say "our opponents said the tragedy was incredibly appalling. We Conservatives believe the tragedy is super-dooper mega appalling times infinity plus infinity. So clearly we Conservatives are the only ones who can be trusted with your safety."

Yep.

Partisan knee jerking in progress.

The idea that there is a cause to the event is verboten in the emotive shouting that is the current round of intelligent dialogue. People do shit like this for a reason; I think it's good to know what that reason is as a measure of prevention.

Just like the fat guy with bad knees it seems. Address the knees and forget about the fat.

Screw that circle-jerky sitting around talking about our feelings on what the causes might be crap. I'm with Steve.

$1:
OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper took aim at rookie Liberal leader Justin Trudeau Wednesday for failing to harshly condemn the Boston bombings while saying governments should ponder the reasons behind these acts.

"When you see this kind of violent act, you do not sit around trying to rationalize it or make excuses for it or figure out its root causes," Harper said, speaking to journalists in London, where he attended the funeral for Margaret Thatcher.

"You condemn it categorically, and to the extent that you can deal with the perpetrators, you deal with them as harshly as possible, and that is what this government would do if it ever was faced with such actions."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper sharply criticized new Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau for trying "to rationalize or make excuses" for whoever was responsible for the bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured over 100 people.

Prevention means you reduce the need to react.

N_Fiddledog @ Wed Apr 17, 2013 4:45 pm

Well you've had about 50 years to work on that root causes of terrorism thing. How you guys doing with that? Other than still watching people get their legs blown off, I mean.

I'm sorry, are you saying here that for the past '50 years'(not sure what that number relates to BTW) the world has been exclusively working on 'root causes', to no avail????

BTW, there is nothing about addressing root causes that says you can't also respond to immediate threats. Having fire prevention standards doesn't mean you don't believe in fighting fires when they do occur.
