PeePee probably won't ever become the PM, simply due to the basic Canadian reality that most of the country isn't as perpetually angry & genuinely stupid as backwoods Alberta now is. Conservatives embracing an extremism so ridiculous that even the followers of Bible Bill Aberhard would be turned off by have no idea how much of a turn-off this is for anyone who can still rub a few brain cells together.
Trudeau is not a good PM. In far too many ways he's quite mediocre. And that doesn't mean anything at all because a majority of Canadians will not vote for a mean little creep like Poilievre. Maybe that's how far too many Americans (and Russians, and Hungarians) like their leaders to be - vicious black-hearted shitheads - but I still believe that normalcy still reigns everywhere else and these types are destined for nothingness just because most people in most places are still too basically decent to ever support them.

He has to be a complete idiot not to know that the Libs are just aching to break out the heavy artillery, that he's already provided them with just from being a complete asshole for over two decades, to beat the hell out of him. Eh, the NDP ad is pretty boilerplate stuff. The Harper Conservatives' attack ads, much as I hated them being run outside election time, were a lot punchier.
As for the whole elite/gatekeeper thing, I'll just link to this article I wrote several years ago about the "rebels vs. elites" concept. I think it could apply just as easily to the political left as it could to the right.

How does one explain the presence of so many different “rebels” and so many different “elites?” One possibility is that there is no single “elite” in Canada that all shares the same opinions and goals, and that the people who all make up the “elite” have just as many disagreements and different goals as any other group of Canadians. The federal Conservatives, for instance, have their supporters among the university professors and the media, while progressives like the Liberals and the NDP have their supporters among entrepreneurs and the business community.
Another possibility is that there is more than one group of “elites” in Canada, each of whom wields some kind of power and influence. Rob Ford got elected in part by criticizing what many people considered Toronto’s downtown elite and standing up for the ordinary citizen, but Ford himself could easily be seen as part of an elite himself, given his family wealth.
So when someone tries to portray themselves as a rebel in Canadian politics, it’s worth considering exactly who the “elite” they’re opposing is, and just what their own status exactly is. Popular culture often depicts rebels who fight back against elites as heroes, and political commentators will often try to portray their adversaries as elites. In some cases, they might actually be right in depicting their adversaries as elites. However, at the same time they might end up being depicted as elites when someone else begins rebelling against their ideas and actions.

^^ I do agree that Jagmeet has been weak/ineffectual with his hand tied supporting the liberals. He can't make much of an attack on Pierre without making those same points against Justin. He is trapped by his own deal with the devil.

The upcoming election is going to be the WORST in Canadian democratic history. The knives are going to be out and BOTH sides are going to be playing up the radical fringe. PP is a paranoid populist who is going to end up exactly like Berlusconi in Italy who play up to the Mussolini fascists. If he wins power, he is going to end up with a tiger by the tail and they are going to EAT HIM ALIVE and then they are going to eat us all.
