While I don't agree with paying everyone and their little brother for injustices that happened in the past, it seems to be the only way these days to get closure on issues like this or the Chinese head tax or Japanese internment.
Good on Harper for being the big man and apologizing when no other political leader had the guts to.

Now that the government has apologised for trying to erase the culture of an entire nation in the past, how about providing funding to native schools in the present? When we have a federal surplus of $10B, telling them that there's "no money" for this to happen is not just tragic, it's morally repugnant.

The residential schools were originally run - pre-Confederation - by Catholics, Protestants and post-Confederation by Liberal AND Conservative governments. This has nothing - despite the partisan hack's attempts to the contrary - to with Left/Right insomuch as it does with antiquated social engineering.

I still think that he's about the most chalk-white person I've ever seen in my whole life, but Stephane Dion still had the balls to state that the residential schools atrocity did happen over a century or more when the country was run most of the time by Liberal governments. I won't ever vote for him or for the Liberals for a wide variety of reasons but he does deserve props for the statement he made on behalf of his party yesterday.
