Wow. That was incredible.

Very disappointing.

After that 90 minutes, the average viewer still has no idea what happened that first day and the days that followed. How the number of hookers a Canadian soldier ran into in London pertains to the battle I am at a loss.

Sir Julian Byng had more than just Sir Arthur for Canadian generals. One Major General for each of the four divisions in the corp plus a whole hockey sock of Brigaders.

Very disappointing

I guess I didn't see it from that point because I already know that. What I found cool was the artifacts, the tunnels. It gave a good background on the soldiers, how they lived leading up to the battle. I think if they had extended it by half an hour, and really went over the battle more it would have most certainly been better.

That is my point though Tricks. For those that have studied the battle, this was indeed an interesting backgrounder on the whys and wherefores. But for the vast majority of people for whom Vimy is just a place in France they keep hearing about, the documentary was useless.

They never covered the actual battle! Hell I don't think they even mentioned how many divisions were there. There were four VCs awarded in the battle, nothing on them or the men that earned them. Nothing about the vicious slog for the 4th div had to the top of the ridge where the monument stands today. Nothing about the battle over three days to take the Pimple and what that meant to the final victory. They loved to talk about the unique ways in which the arty was employed, but never mentioned that it was the future general of the Canadian Army in WWII that helped devise that plan. I am at a loss as how you talk that much about the arty and NOT even mention Andrew McNaughton.

If indeed Canada became a country in that battle, then it was when four divisions of infantry went over the top that day in 1917. When men from one end of the country to the other fought side by side by side for the first time ever. When they died for each other. Not when they were sitting in the subways, not when they were training for the battle and MOST definetly not when they were getting drunk in London.

Definitely did not thing of it that way. I guess I was looking at it from my point of view.

Didn't they say there was 4?

True. The mainly focused on the lead up to the battle, the what the soldiers did and how they felt. Explained the creeping Barrage, and then went over the battle in the last 10 minutes. From that aspect it was disappointing. But at the same time, the target audience of that was people like you or mustang or Tman. They know the history already but get to see other things, such as the subway, or the artifacts.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

LOL, thanks. As I read it now, I wish I had reversed the order I laid the paragraph out.

Like so :

If indeed Canada became a country in that battle, it was not when they were sitting in the subways, not when they were training for the battle and MOST definetly not when they were getting drunk in London. It was when four divisions of infantry went over the top that day in 1917. When men from one end of the country to the other fought side by side by side for the first time ever. I always have a hard time choosing priority of ideas in a paragraph like that...........

Anywho, I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread ;)
