Your welcome. That was the reason it was such a short post I was hoping people would go look it up.
It's also my argument for treating as many people as possible like Canadians until they prove otherwise.

"Cooley's looking glass." Just read it on Wikipedia... Interesting concept, does make one wonder why we have so many jerkwads when we don't start off treating them that way. I guess they see themselfs as being treated like that and thus act that way and in return it gets re-enforced in their brains.

Or, they never considered how they are percieved by others, and don't really care beyond their own needs.

It has far more to do with roles then norms or mores. If someone is African American and walking down the street and gets stopped by cops or just kind of looked down on all the time by others they begin to fulfill the "street punk" role others put them in over time.
When we treat Muslim immigrants to Canada like potential terrorists even in casual body language we are reinforcing the idea they could fill that role.

So Cooleys Looking Glass is saying that it is societies fault for how people act. Where does it take into account ones own responsibility to not be a "Street Punk" or "Terrorist". I understand what cooleys looking glass is saying and agree with it in a general way yet I also feel that a person should be accountable for his or her own actions. Thus no matter how society treats you it still does not give you the right to be a "Thug"

No cooley's looking glass means society can reinforce roles. It means that treating people like terrorists makes it far more likely they will over time fall into the role.
It points out the power of peer pressure and the need for people to "fill a role" within society. It may also point out our responsibility to treat each other with dignity and respect.
