Talk about must see TV...........anyone remember that slogan? Must see TV. Around the time that it was being used was the last time that SNL was actually relevant. With SNL currently being a shell of its former self, it is hard to believe that SNL was at one time at the very forefront of comedy/entertainment. There was a time where every water cooler discussion on Monday was a recap of the events of the most recent SNL's skits. People did impersonations of the characters on SNL. Some of the biggest stars in the entertainment world got their start/push on SNL. Some of the most talked about events in the music world happened on SNL. There was Elvis Costello playing a forbidden song on live TV and being banned from SNL, being unbanned many years later and then interrupting a Beasty boys set to duplicate the playing of said banned song. There was Sinead o'Conner destroying her career by ripping up a picture of the Pope. Dave Grohl playing drums for Nirvana as well as Tom Petty (RIP Tom) as well as playing with the Foo Fighters nine times. The first time that I had ever heard of (let alone seen ) Pearl Jam was on SNL. I was instantly hooked. There were many more.
Tomorrow night is the SNL 50th anniversary special. Despite the decline in ratings over the years, I find it almost impossible to put this many stars from over the years in the same place and it not be anything but spectacular. I mean you would really have to go out of your way to fuck this up. Hey anything is possible but I would bet the farm that this will be a special event that will be talked about for quite some time. The list of stars is pretty mind blowing. Definitely must see TV. If it runs past your bedtime in Newfoundland Time or Atlantic Time, then remember to set the DVD recorder. Hopefully we will have some more Monday morning water cooler dialog that revolves around SNL. We all could use a good laugh right about now.
Snl is one of the things I miss about not having cable.
So many of the best talent started there.
SNL has always been hit and miss. Even back in it's heyday, they had some stinkers. Not every sketch can be a Schweddy Balls or a Van Down by the River or Celebrity Jeopardy w/ Sean Connery.
Some last forever though, like "Do not taunt danger ball".
"Happy Fun Ball" my bad memory. Still funny though.
SNL = The Thing That Wouldn't Die
