70 000 earn minimum wage ...Not including tips...
Anybody paying minimum wage in Alberta has a permanent help wanted sign on the door.

Its really a moot point here as its rare to see any place paying min wage anyway, but I like the idea none the less.

It depends if unemployment is low or high.

I know plenty of jobs that pay the minimum wage around Ottawa (mostly service jobs like waiter, fast food cook and those kind).

Wasn't the increase in minimum wage announced quite a while ago?

$8.40 / hour???? Why they hell didn't they just round it off to $8.50? Not that it matters though, I just saw a sign at A&W on the way home advertisising part time help for $10.50 / hour and Micky D's is paying around $10.00 / hour. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone paying less than McDonalds .. well maybe Wallmart or Lakeside Packers (gotta love that foreign slave labour in Brooks).

The article quotes 70,000 people, ie about 3%. Why are you guys still speaking in generalities?
