Unsound Unsound:
I don't agree with forcing anyone to sing, but certainly they should stand, remove hats, and either sing or shut up. That's just showing respect and I think most decent people should do the same for any anthem, not just their own.

I feel the same about things like praying in certain public circumstance such as grace before a meal. I'm not a believer so I don't pray with people, or even say amen, but I don't think it hurts me in any way to bow my head and shut the fuck up for a minute or two while those who do believe do their thing.

At the very least, they can mouth the words. You still have to think about 'em when you pretend to sing them.

Maybe things have changed since I went to school but, NOBODY got bullied for taking part in singing the national anthem. They got bullied and/or beat up for any other number of reasons but the anthem wasn't one of them. Hell, we had one kid in my Grade 6 class that would beat you up after school if you were dicking around during the anthem 8O

I was never once forced to sing the national anthem by anyone during the entire 44+ years of my life thus far. I doubt that the vast majority of Canadians alive today have been forced to do it either. Has something changed so radically in the last few weeks that it's absolutely essential that we have to force students today to do what most of the rest of were never forced to do? :?

I guess that's the difference then between you and I. We had to sing it every school day from Gr.1 to Gr.8. And in Grade 8, I was attending a really progressive school and we still had to sing the anthem.

As somebody pointed out, nobody is forced to sing. There's just no accompaniment, so it might be more obvious who doesn't sing. If kids today are anything like they were in my days, there'll lots of mumblers, or guys like me who just stand there.

I think we overdo singing the anthem - it should be reserved for special occasions. (Those don't include hokey games). Otherwise if feels too much like patriotism shoved down our throat.

Never felt that way to me when we had to sing it. I guess I just love Canada more than the rest of you mooks :P

Just kidding of course

I just don't think it's a huge deal to expect Canadians to actually know the words to their national anthem.

Perhaps it's more of a sign that some organizations are realizing what a fuck up
we have made of our country over the last 20-30 years, and the pendulum
needs to swing the other way for a while.

My recent trip to the commemoration of HMCS Esquimalt was proof enough;
I was one of the very very few who didn't have a direct connection to that
ship, or the RCN, who was there nonetheless.

Mayor was late, no schoolkids, no nothing.

Pretty shameful when you see the Europeans have much more respect for our dead
than we do.

We would sing O Canada at school but at one point everybody, (but especially the other kids standing close to me), told me to shut up. :(

Sorry folks, but the Board said there would be no"Anthem Police" and that it was a learning, not a nationalism exercise. By the way, I was beaten till black and blue from the top of my ass to the back of my knees for not singing solo the anthem when I lived in the U. S. by a music teacher with the improbable name of Richard Strauss. It was grade 8 and my explanation that I was Canadian held no water. It looked great in my speedo at practice!

"looked great" and "speedo" in the same sentence really do not go well together...
