You can protest without disrupting.

Sure can...the Falun Gong protest outside the Chinese consulate in Vancouver is that way, just a vigil outside the consulate and banners.

Sure, but that doesnt make the news, and it doesnt you a talk with Iggy.

Creating a 10,000 strong angry mob sure does though ;)

Oh ya it did....it was so peaceful that mental midget Sam Sullivan deemed it against city bylaw and ordered it dismantled. Idiot!!!! its back though and all the power to them.

We also had a peaceful march from our school to VCC...we got time with the politicians doing a ground breaking ceremony and we got our needs met. At the rally the elders asked for a peaceful march, no disruption of traffic, obey the crosswalks and be respectful...we did and prevailed. Not bad for a bunch of Indians eh?

This shit has to be stopped by any group. Indians blocking the rail lines.. send a steamer and shove them off .. Tamils on the highway.. send a snowplough ... shove em off... they came here for a better life .. so they all say to get in... so leave the shit over there!

Harper has stated that we are commited until 2011. As far as I know that hasn't changed, if you have a link to an article that says different please post it.

That date was set almost a year ago when they negotiated it with the Liberals. Prior to that any date set for departure of the troops was being called treasonous by some of the people on here now supporting it and that Harpers position was he doesn't cut and run. I believe that is what Mr. C is referring to.

If that's what you're referring to then it's not a great example. The Liberals were also all over the map when it came to pull out dates as well. They had supported a 2009 pull out but had no realistic plans on how they were going to achieve that goal. They then switched to having troops in a "non-combat role" which still would have left the majority of the troops there anyways.

The Conservatives decision came after the Manely report and they worked with the opposition to come to an agreement on the date. You can say they were pushed but in the end the two main parties came to a consensus, I don't consider that flip flopping, I call it working within the confines of a minority government. Isn't that what you all ways say they should be doing? Then after the Liberals were heard accusing the Conservatives of cutting and running because he set the date for 2011, as to rub Harpers statements from earlier in his face which made no sense because they themselves did not support extnding the mission at first. Ya sure they had an opportunity to throw a remark Harper made back at him but does that mean the Liberals now support extending past 2011?

I don't know, what does Ignatuif have to say about his position on Afghanistan? Oh that's right, you can't tell me because Iggy hasn't defined his position yet has he. Be careful about criticizing Harper for extending the date to 2011 though because I find it unusual that Iggy is now having meetings and talking to the US about this very issue.

I can actually see protesting things that are caused by our governments at any level that one would disagree with.. but things outside the country that we have no control over.. no way! keep that shit out of here. and if you want to do something to change your homeland.. then go home and do it!

"Once we turn a blind eye to civil dis-obedience, as we did in Caledonia and on the 401 near Belleville, we are saying anybody can break the law and the cops will just idly watch it all happen.

We get the society we deserve."

Personally, I'm very pleased to be living in a country where it's citizens can peacefully protest the government without getting the snot beat out of them by some brain dead, remorseless, son of a bitch with a uniform.

These are people like you and I,Canadian citizens who are losing family and friends by the hundreds. I'd have little respect for them if they did not take to the streets to protest and so would most if they took the time to think about it. [B-o]

Protests that negatively impact on peoples ability to move about freely are in turn denying other people their own freedoms and rights.

I'm sure if you lived nearby the protest you would be quite happy with the fact that all the cops were tied up watching the crowd and all the ambulances and firetrucks were having to be re-routed to their calls because people waving the banners of a terrorist organisation were blocking the roads.

We obviously see 'respect' differently.

Nobody is denying the freedom to demonstrate, even if it's by people demonstrating for a cause that Canada has no part in. Just don't be selfish about it.

not the way to gain support... especially with all those Tiger flags freshly unfurled

Yeah, it's all about the flags.

They cost the city of Ottawa a million dollars for their illegal two week protest.

Protesting is illegal? Since when?

If such a thing should ever happen to this country, I'll be sure to make protesting illegally my full time job.

Don't forget to wave the flag of a terrorist group as you do it. A group such as the LTTE that Canada's parliament has decreed as terrorist.
Plenty of people waving that flag and blocking roads yesterday as ambulances couldn't get to the down-town hospitals.
Nice.

As I said, protest away, just don't tread on other Canadians rights to move freely and jeopordize the ability of Toronto Fire, EMS and Police to respond to emergency calls for six hours in the centre of Canada's most populous city.

But hey, you probably never thought about the negative impact this would have on other people did you?

Yep, it's all about the flag. You can't feign total ignorance of an issue if you don't focus on a peice of cloth flapping in the wind.

EyeBrock @ Mon May 11, 2009 10:29 am

But you can ignore thousands of people put at risk by people blocking the highway as they wave said flag?

You really miss the point here don't you? You seem to think it's ok to block ambulances and fire trucks for six hours, never mind the thousands of other Canadians who sat for hours in traffic jams because of this, quite blatantly illegal protest?

Regardless this will turn the tide of public opinion firmly against the Tamils but I'd hazard a guess that you either don't see that or don't care.
