My goodness, what a typical case of US paranoia
This is ridiculous.
This is ridiculous, the officer who stopped this ambulance should have his taken away.
Of course, if we had a hospital that could handle these emergencies we wouldn't need to rush people over all the time. I know someone who last month had to be sent over to Henry Ford.
I would rather take the risk of crossing the border (and being stopped) than being stuck in one of Windsor's hospitals.
This is not US policy just some stupid SOB on a power trip.
There is an established protocol. You can bet those idiots are in deep do-do.
If this passes without apologies and reprimands then we can interpret it as policy and can ritously bitch.
I think the real cause for shame should be the Canadian health care system...again.
the hospital should have been equiped to handle the emergency, Windsor isn't a small city, its hospitals should be able to look after its' citizens without having them have to go to the US for treatment.

I agree and plus, why go to Detroit? The most crime ridden and disgusting city in America where I doubt the hospitals are any better than Windsors. A heart attack and the Windsor hospital couldn't handle it?
Perhaps living 2km from the American border makes certain cities lax on self-sufficiency where they don't have to spend millions of dollars and instead use American facilities. Just a thought.

No man, if you have a heart problem, you want to go to Henry Ford, they're top notch.
I know when my dad was diagnosed with cancer we had to get all the scans and such done in Detroit because they had more of these machines (and a much short wait time) than the whole of Ontario (had to go up to London if we wanted them done in Canada)
As much as I do love our health care system, it really does suck. Unless of course you get shipped States-side for something critical, good 'ol OHIP, those can be some pretty nasty bills.
And really, Detroit isn't that bad, like every city, it just has it's areas where you under no circumstances show white skin... Or Latino skin, or Asian Skin, or black skin for that matter. Or poor... Never try to beg in Mexican Town, seen a few people get pulled into trucks, one of the safest places in the city, for us Cdn tourists anyways.
I forgot to add, going to a Windsor Hospital should be a last resort. I know of a lot of good nurses, but I know of a lot of fuck ups by the doctors. They're the kind of places that you go to die if you can't get someone to take care of you at home, although they are getting better, and not all the doctors are bad...

I'll take your word for it in terms of hospitalization but there are a lot of fuck ups in any hospital and I'm sure their are other alternatives from Windsor to somewhere else in Ontario. Detroit is still the most crime ridden city in America. Also, isn't Detroit like 85% Black?
Probably, but remember, this is a city that is doing it's best to try and get rid of all racism, the city that held a funeral for the "N word." They're doing their best, and in a lot of the city, I feel genuinely safe (I'm Scottish, skin doesn't get much whiter than mines). But again, you just don't "roll into someone's 'hood," like any city, that would be almost certain suicide.
And again I'll use the example of Mexican Town, just off of the Bridge. You will never see as much as a begger wandering, they keep it clean and they keep it safe, and now every night is "Canadian at Par" Night, bet they're doing great business.
Almost all of Detroit's crime is black against black.

If my life is in danger, I don't care about international boundaries. I want the best hospital that I can get to while not killing myself in transit. In the case of someone in Windsor with a heart issue, that's Henry Ford. A low crime rate around the hospital doesn't matter when you're dead.
I'm not exactly versed in Southern Ontario hospitals, so I don't know where the next one "somewhere else in Ontario" is. Could be in London. Could be in Kitchener. Could be in Toronto. Detroit is still much closer than any of those. Windsor to London is 193km by road. If there was an air medivac available, it would have lessened the time for that, but it still would be longer than an (unhindered) trip to Detroit. Windsor Regional Hospital to Henry Ford is 14km. I'd take my chance on that trip before going elsewhere.
Wow, I never thought I'd ever be in the position to think that something in Detroit was...better than horrible.

Personally I don't care what you think and your opinion is immaterial. You don't care about international boundaries? The person was held up at the border concerning security matters and in the post 9/11 age of terrorism, it would only get worse considering. Well, there is always the alternatives of Canadian medicine by which the Windsor hospitals should be fully quipped to deal with.
In the case of crime rate around the hospital, it wouldn't matter anyways since you're dead at the border because of delays. What gives with the Henry Ford hospital and its exemplary record? It mostly deals with transplants and lung diseases.

Henry Ford mostly deals with transplants and lung diseases?
Really? All I've ever heard about was their expertise in matters of the heart (I couldn't think of any way to say "they does good with hearts eh!")
He was held up at the border because they got some asshat at customs, probably the same guy who threatened to turn us back because we didn't declare our luggage, and then when we went through the list of what we had that wasn't bought in the States he told us to stop being a smart-ass and again threatened to run us in and have us turned back.
Unfortunately there are those that seek that power when they go into that job, but most border guards would of had the arm up and waved the ambulance through. Oh, most of the assholes are usually new up from the Southern border and haven't adapted to Canadians yet.
The best people to get are still those that have been working there for a while. They know how keep things calm, will even joke with you (but will be in a way asking questions), nicest people you'll ever meet. And they'll pick up on the smallest of lies, why it's never worth it to lie, even about a bottle of booze, they've got a sixth sense.
Tman1 Tman1:
You don't care about international boundaries?
Not if my life is in danger. If that's the fastest and best option, I'm not going to sit and think "Well, the hospital is in a high crime area in another country and there's apparently a small chance some idiot guard will hold me up."
I don't think (unlike you and the US government) that people should have to put their lives at risk in order to get emergency healthcare.
If you want nationalism to extend to what hospital you choose, fine by me. I'll take a spot in the closest hospital that can treat me, though.

Well, what *you* want and what the U.S government wants concerning who crosses their border, has the final say who crosses it. My main point was that Windsor in the most richest and populous province in the country, should have the means to care for their patients and was this not a simple heart attack? The border after 9/11 will always have more delays be it security or otherwise. Nationalism (no idea where you go that from) is that we are taking at face value the sufficiency of a Detroit hospital. I've been to Detroit, you don't want to be there but not their health care, which I might add brings another point. A Canadian going to the U.S for health care. What about those complexities, nevermind the border crossing.
For Ontarians, as long as it's a life saving procedure, OHIP covers it. My friends dad got shipped over to Henry Ford, had some complications, bill would of been 6 figures, but OHIP covered an Ontarian's life that was in danger.
Oh, and remember, the US Government has a plan in place that lets emergency vehicles get through quickly. The problem here was just some asshat who's likely going to lose his job because he didn't follow protocol and put someone's life in danger. I'm willing to put money that this guy just got transfered from the Mexican border, you can always tell, they're usually complete assholes.
