UN discusing UFOs....????
Thanos Thanos:
It's a sick thought that the first humans to meet intelligent aliens would be representatives from the UN. What are they going to do, run an oil-for-palaces scam on Alpha Centauri or Cardassia Prime?
Better than invading on the false pretense of WMD.
IF there are indeed aliens out there, from another solar system, they likely have a fairly comprehensive idea of what the lay of the land on earth is, by monitioring our electronic media.
IF there are indeed aliens out there, from another solar system, they have their own protocols for first contact. The ball is in their court and will play it when they are ready.
IF there are indeed aliens out there, from another solar system, we must not assume they are friendly and benevolent.
IF there are indeed aliens out there, from another solar system, the possibility exists there may be more than one race and they might have competing agendas.

*Watches as the UN flushes money down the toilet*
I think it's a legitimate issue. If it wasn't every nation from the US to the former Soviet Union would not have spent time, money, and personnel looking into it.
I agree. It is a legitimate issue. Enough people of unquestionable character have seen UFO's and admitted it (and I believe a lot more people have seen them and kept their mouths shut lest they be branded as loonies) that the matter should be addressed and contingency plans considered. That the UN tried to keep this a secret is no surprise as the subject still evokes titters and the UN has enough problems without being chided for this, too.
For once I actually support the UN. I don't think they need to spend a bunch of money on this, but it makes sense for them to have a framework in place so that if there ever is a contact the response can be coordinated.
Hopefully, any aliens will not make the mistake of landing in an islamic nation or in rural Arkansas where some ignorant asstards will murder them and start an interstellar war.
