Black smoke pouring from beneath Scotia Plaza in heart of Toronto's business district
$1:
An explosion that echoed from beneath the heart of Toronto's business district at King Street West and Bay Street was caused by a blown hydro vault, a senior fire official told CBC News.
Plumes of black smoke poured underneath Scotia Plaza around 5:15 p.m. as commuters leaving work for the day began screaming in the confusion.
Witnesses at the scene reported screaming as the noise continued for several moments. Toronto police have not yet said what caused the sound of the blast, but a fire official on the scene told CBC News that the hydro vault — which contains high-voltage transformers — blew.
Officers descended on the area Monday afternoon and blocked off King and Bay. Despite those efforts, many people stayed close enough to document the chaos.
Hopefully it's not sabotage. We've had a boatload of infrastructure attacks around the San Francisco Bay Area over the past ten years and no one's been caught. Hope that crap isn't taking root up your way....on May Day.

Those transformers make about as much noise as an exploding MOAB when they burst. We had one blow in downtown Calgary about ten years ago. They evacuated the entire area thinking it was a terror attack. Hate to think of what it must have been like down in the confined area of an underground utility tunnel where the noise would be amplified exponentially.
Apparently Hydro One is claiming responsibility for this latest explosion.
(sarcasm off)
Justifies a rate increase.

Jeez, sabotage and terrorists are about the last thing I'd think of.
Where I live there's be a huge bang, spark show and the all the lights in town go out.
"WTF did Sparky at the mill do now?"
They were good at that. Every fucking 'upgrade' you could be assured of spending 6-8 hours in the dark, no cafes, stores or even gas pumps working to leave town, calling around to see who with a wood stove was playing cards by candlelight.

I really like the post that shared here.
Here in Quebec, the separatists were already blaming the muslims before the smoke went in the air
After, they praised Hydro Quebec.

When hearing hooves on the ground, most people think "horses", but others are conditioned to think "Zebras".
