I love the way Brenda is fully assimilated. That and the way she doesn't complain about the labour markets here compared to Holland. That she'd be doing better back home. Of course there's BC's supernatural beauty.

Thank you :)

Five days to organize a conference call amoung the transport ministers over the volcanic ash situation is all we ever need to know about how well the EU runs.

Becuas they've realised that giving people paid vacations keeps them in good spirits and keeps them from losing productivity at their jobs. It sounds like laziness in Puritanical North America, but it works in Europe.

I'm sorry, having vacations being considered a "Human Right" is a stretch. Having vacation time is one thing, having them considered to be a human right is something completely else entirely.

I'm not sure how exactly this is going to "work" in Europe. I smell major government involvement

Yeah, that definitely is stretching it by calling it human right.

The disabled are well taken care of, don't worry.

That's cool. Just for comparison sake, do you have any figures, even ballpark figures, as to the monthly or annual stipend for ppl on disability? Also, I dunno if it's an EU thing or each country takes care of its own with its own rates.

KorbenDeck @ Mon Apr 19, 2010 8:31 pm

The is nothing right with this idea at all. If you can't afford a vaction you don't go, its just that simple.

$1:
Intended to instill a sense of cultural pride in Europeans, Mr. Tajani's human-rights travel will also help bridge the continent's north-south divide and pad resorts' business in their off-season, the Times reports.

Here's a freaken idea for cultural pride, don't throw away your culture for others to begin with

Its a country regulated thing, and I really wonder what the EU has to do with it, except for tourism :)

It depends. You can get disability when you can are able to work 65% or less than you did before you got "disabled", and when you are completely unable to work (after an accident or something) with no chance to be able to get back to work, you get 65% or what you made the year prior, PLUS you can get up to 17000 euro for a car, or cab-costs (3600 euro..)

These are minimum wages by age (not for people on disability, just minimum wages.... 23+ year old is considered adult, under that is considered "youth")

Minimum(jeugd)loon per 1 januari 2010
Wettelijk bruto minimumloon voor werknemers bij een volledig dienstverband. De minimumlonen zijn met 0,64% geïndexeerd.
Age Month Week day (8 hours)
23 years and older € 1.407,60 € 324,85 € 64,97
22 jaar € 1.196,45 € 276,10 € 55,22
21 jaar € 1.020,50 € 235,50 € 47,10
20 jaar € 865,65 € 199,75 € 39,95
19 jaar € 739,00 € 170,55 € 34,11
18 jaar € 640,45 € 147,80 € 29,56
17 jaar € 556,00 € 128,30 € 25,66
16 jaar € 485,60 € 112,05 € 22,41
15 jaar € 422,30 € 97,45 € 19,49

A Euro is about a buck and half, so the mimimum wage for a 23 year old is about $2100.

PublicAnimalNo9 @ Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:08 pm

Is that per month??

Brenda @ Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:14 pm

First amount per month, second per week, third per day. It's based on 40hrs/wk, gross wages, but when you earn this, you hardly pay any taxes, if any at all. First bracket ends at 17,000 euro or something, above that, you pay taxes.

You get "holiday pay" too.

When you earn this, you can get rent assistance, healthcareinsurance cost assistance, public transit assistance etc etc. When you have kids, you also get child tax benefits, sports are subsidized...

But, welfare with kids is only 909 Euro/mo (about $1300)
(you also have right to rent assistance, and all the other shit, on top of welfare)

PublicAnimalNo9 @ Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:18 pm

WOW, not bad. That's what Canada needs to do. Boost up the basic nontaxable income amount or drastically reduce the tax rate for the first bracket.

Brenda @ Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:22 pm

You also have the right to 4 weeks of (paid) holiday while on welfare (20 days), so you dont have to apply for jobs.

Well that seems a bit overboard. 8O

Or 13 week when you can get the "you have to apply for jobs" restriction suspended for that time, so you can go visit your mom in Turkey

You have to apply for jobs, not necessarily for jobs that suit you, btw ;)

I knew one goof years ago when welfare paid pretty good, would do his job searches, even go to interviews, but at the interview he'd tell the prospective employer that he had health issues and would probably miss, on average, 1-2 days a week.
FYI he had NO health issues.
