Through a succession of Liberal and Conservative governments, starting in 1974, the amendment to the Bank Act and the handover (by Governor Bouey? of the Bank of Canada) of control of our money supply to the private Banks has resulted in an accumulation of unpaid and totally unnecessary interest to the tune of about $400 billion on top of the principal.
Then came the abolition of FIRA and the Free Trade Act - pushed through on the basis of lies about its true intent and incompetence in dealing with the American negotiators, which resulted in the unrestricted purchase by Americans of Canadian assets and corporations, ably assisted by the depressed value of the Canadian $.
Then came NAFTA and the astounding and unreported clauses that gave American COMPANIES the ability to sue the Canadian Government if legislation interfered with current of future profits and allowed American Trade Lobbies to impose penalties if our goods were cheaper than theirs (read softwood) in spite of the supposed intent of NAFTA to abolish tariffs.
As if the stately elder Bush and the silky sleight of hand of Bill Clinton weren’t bad enough we now have to deal with the unholy reign of G.W. Bush supported by the oil and money and armaments interests.
They have created a degree of instability in the world between NorthWest and SouthEast that is worse than the cold war.
The ubiquitous "War on Terror" - which resulted from the 9/11 disaster - which resulted from U.S. interference in Arabian/Muslim affairs - has led to the U.S. Patriot Act I and II, torture of prisoners and suppression of Habeus Corpus and Civil Rights.
The Chretien Government did have the balls to refuse to overtly join the "Coalition of the Willing" but it caved on the negotiation for a North American Union.
I don’t know if this surrender to U.S. policies is due to being bought, or to a hope of protecting the Canadian economy from repercussions if we disobeyed, or an expectation of reaping some of the spoils from the putative U.S. domination of the world. But it is being done under the table and without any analysis in the media.
I do know that the British £ is inextricably entwined with the U.S. $ and Prime Minister Blair has no option but to comply with Bush dictates.
I also suspect that the Bush Administration braggadacio is now based largely on the weak state of the U.S. $ and Bush has no way to back out of his determination to prevent Iraq, Iran, Venezuela and the OPEC cartel from trading oil in Euros.
With the possibility that the U.S. $ could become so fragile that the slightest selloff by Patagonia could cause a collapse, why on earth would Canada want to tie itself to a failing giant.?
In the absence of any reasonable explanation I have no hesitation in labelling the people who are facillitating this deep integration as either idiots or traitors. - and I don’t think they are stupid.
In justification of this diatribe I should tell you that I have some knowledge of foreign social structures. I grew up as a small child in Persia (now Iran). I have lived and worked in Turkey and vacationed throughout the Middle East. I have lived and worked in several countries of the Far East and South America. All the indigenous peoples of the Near and Far East have a totally different mindset compared to the Euro/North American mindset. They do not have 2,000 years of indoctrination in Greek philosophy and the concepts of democracy. They are more emotional and more concerned with concepts of family honour and tribal/ethnic customs. They view with distaste the pseudo Christian ethics that have degenerated into compromise, pragmatic acceptance of lies and deceit and accomodation of the path of least resistance or lowest common denominator i.e. without principle They have a thin veneer of Western political process but there is little social or political infrastructure.
It took Kemal Ataturk 3 generations of compusory schooling to lift the Turkish people from the feudal state of the Ottoman Empire to a quasi European level of education in the main cities. The countryside is still feudal.
The Iraquis had a non-industrial civilisation that stretched back 3,000 years. They did things their way - which is not our way. The Brits fought for 25 years to get them to change and then had to give up. There is no way the war in Iraq can be stopped inside one generation, let alone the problems in Afghanistan.
This brief history will hopefully point out how futile is the U.S. effort to try to impose "democracy" in Iraq or Afghanistan no matter how urgently the U.S. needs to protect its oil supplies and the U.S. $.
But our government under Martin and now Harper is spinelessly obeying the U.S. directives.
We have our own Security Measures and dismantling of Civil Rights, the forthcoming I.D. card, The Smart Border initiative to integrate Customs and Immigration policies and to be applied to the sea perimeter not the land border, the Smart Regulations Initiative to integrate all our business, social, environmental, legal and security laws, the integration of armed forces proposed by the BiNational Planning Group, and overarching all these the Prosperity and Security Agreement signed by Bush, Martin and Fox in 2005. (Note the deceptive terminology)
The latest insult to our national psyche is to have Lockheed Martin write the program for the Canadian Census. It is a fait accompli and must have been months or years in the preparation but we only learn about it weeks before Census Day. Despite assurances from Statistics Canada that our data will be secure (whatever that means), any one with half an idea about programming knows that having provided the architecture and protocols, the writer can get access to the data.
( I bet Statistics Canada can’t even get access to the architecture and secret protocols).
Under the Patriot Act, Lockheed Martin can be required to deliver that data to the U.S. Government.
To me this has every sign of a first step towards integration of the population data base.
So this is why I am drawing my line in the sand. If I refuse to fill in the Census Form, nobody gets hurt except me so it is a peaceful protest by civil disobedience.
If I am fined or jailed I will try and get as much publicity as possible and take it as high up the Court ladder as I can. I don’t want to do this but someone has to start.
I don’t want to go it alone so I am asking all patriotic citizens across Canada, if you are fed up with the direction that our country is taking, then to join with me.
If we can raise 1,000 objectors I would think the government will have to take notice.
If we can raise 10,000 the courts couldn’t handle it.
If Harper intends to use strong arm tactics to suppress dissent this will force his hand and people will see what lies in store.
Will you join with me? Just lose the Census form and reply YES to this e-mail.
Will you make the effort before we are totally, irrevocably, forced into union with the United States.?
Derek Skinner, 81 years old, Canadian.
YES, Derek.

Just remember, it is not the Patriot Act but the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act of 2001."<br />
<br />
There is nothing patriotic about it.<br />

That name sounds very familiar, but I may be mistaken...
Anyways Mr Skinner, just know that I really enjoyed your letter, and agree with it all. Know that you are not alone in refusing to fill in your census papers.
Could the census be the first shot fired in the war to take back Canada?
---
If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.
Count me in as one of the 10,000 objectors.
I will NOT complete my census form.
I object to the quite assimilation of Canada into the US, and am fearful of my personal information landing in American databases.
Mr. Skinner I stand with you in your fight.

A magnificent tribute to this wonderful country, Derek.
Thank you ... and YES !!
Good post Derek. Yes, I refuse to fill out the census and will join you in jail if needs be.

Ditto to Milton's comment.

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." Friedrich Nietzsche
This is an awesome letter. The discussion that *should* result from this yet-an-other booboo from our feds does not appear to be supported by our mainstream medias or political establishments. Even the Bloc for heaven's sake that often stirs useful shit...
How can we more effectively take back our medias so that they do a better job informing the public? Vive is an excellent start but what's next over and above civil disobediance???

"We are all in this together somehow, some more than others somehow"
Derek, count me in to protest.
However, I wish there were a more devious but legal way to foil the powers-that-be at Statscan; direct confrontation with burocracy can be wearying.
What is the opinion (legal or otherwise) here on the position that this isn't really a Canadian Census, but an American Corporate Census of Canadians, with some of the info garnered subsequently sold to Statscan???
This would not make it illegal to refuse, would it, since it is NOT a Canadian Census. Heck, the information could probably be obtained from any credit rating bureau!
Again, I would prefer a legal but devious route to foil the American's attempt to collect Canadian data.
H.F. Wolff
To those who will refuse the census and face the possibility of imprisonment ... I wish I were in a position to join you. If I did this, however, I would soon be unemployed (and probably dead in the near future). Therefore for what this is worth ... I salute your courage and your honour. If a subscription should be raised for legal defence I'll gladly kick in what I can.
Great stuff! I sent my census envelope in, with a poster from Count Me Out. My census form still sits on my desk with the bar code cut out and swear words all over it. If a government pion actually knocks on my door I will hand it to them and they can kiss me a**. This is not the hill I am willing to die on (I'll save the killing time for when ID cards are made mandatory), but I will not fill out some stupid form. Lockheed Martain's involvement is not the reason, it is the governments never ending list of forms. I play on the fact that we all just finishd doing taxes and now they foist yet another "mandatory" form on us. This gets people irate and they start to think about government intrusion and waste. I am sure once the government carries out the next 911 in Canada that we will all be mailed draft cards to fill out so we can go die in the nuclear wasteland of Iran, it never ends.

<p> YES! I am, no, WE are in, my partner and I. Sorry it took me a while to respond. I had to convince my partner who is a stickler for rules and has never ever broken the law - till now! <p> Thanks Derek!
I have made a map to put yourself on if you are boycotting the census.<br />
