Tantra and its owner company, Penny Lane Entertainment Group, argued the scanning system was for their customers' safety and discouraged troublemakers from entering the bar.

In a ruling released Wednesday, Frank Work, Alberta's information and privacy commissioner wrote: "The organization did not provide any evidence to establish that collecting the complainant's driver's license information, or that of other patrons, is in any way a deterrent to violent behaviour."

Wayne Wood, a spokesman for the privacy office, said in January that the ruling would set a precedent for all bars and nightclubs in Alberta.

What I don't understand is why do people allow this to go on by continuing to
patronize places that do this? I have walked out of a purchase that I thought
was asking me for too much information. Too many people don't consider
not making the purchase an option????????

UPS made a delivery to our home recently and asked for a signature on an
electronic contraption. We refused. The agent was so confused, she walked
away with parcel in hand and then came back after having thought of a way
around it and made the delivery.

It seems many of us prefer to have the "things" we want enough to play a
game we don't like rather than force businesses to play the way we want by
refusing to be just a consumer. We need to be activists first, consumers
second obviously.

Some franchises in Ontario ask for your full name and mailing address when buying a...haircut. I have yet to observe a single person who has resisted. They all just obliviously belt out the information while others around them are waiting.

"I have yet to observe a single person who has resisted. "

Sheep. I'll bet they complain about all the junk mail they get.

In the article, it states they would make the clubs private, in order to get this information. I belong to private clubs, and they don't have my drivers' license. Or really anything beyond my name. Sometimes, I don't even give them my real name.

Taking the clubs private proves it's not about curbing violence. It's about marketing.

I saw a person angrily walk out of Home Depot empty handed because they wanted too much personal information for a silly buying card.

My neighbor complained to me one day that she walked out of a tool rental store because they wanted a copy of her drivers license to rent out a stupid tile saw.

The list goes on and on.

You are correct, if only more people said "fuck you!" this kind of over reach would come to a sudden end.

Now the government wants to brand us electronically with chips that can detect your movements almost everywhere you go. It won't ever stop until the people force it to stop.
