The kicker, was they sound like they want more people to submit it online next time.

Thanks for posting this story DC.

Here's a printed text report: 2006 census results delayed amid problems

Stats Can is in denial. "There was NO boycott dammit! It was all the enumerators fault!"

E-mails obtained by CBC News under an Access to Information request showed the anger felt by Statistics Canada employees. "We are on the verge of creating a major public relations backlash," one e-mail stated.

Yeah, brilliant deduction Sherlock!

Statistics Canada said it's not about the names, but the numbers. And its numbers are accurate, it said, adding that it got 97 per cent of the census forms back from Canadians.

97% my ass! It's going against government decree for Canadian's to lie on a census form, but Stats Can sure has no problems lying about its "you will comply" counts. How many of those returned forms were not filled out? How many were messed up? How many were incomplete? How many contained bogus information?
Thanks for that link. CBC's Search turned up nothing.

Could this mean they have given up enumerating those that have refused?

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.
The image being portrayed is that Stats Can is at fault, as opposed to the other way around, which indicates to me that they'll let this one pass. I don't think they had a choice, and they have failed to admit to the real reason why there was so little compliance, which means the story is a face saving gesture only.
Expect to see next a token resignation or two. I have to wonder what their plan is for the next census since so far nothing has changed and we'll have the exact same reasons to boycott it again. Do they figure we'll just forget about it?
I'd like to see the full documents that the CBC says they have so as to find out what really is going on. The neat little excerpts from their report could mean anything when viewed out of context.
A rare and tasty victory.
Congrats to all who stood firm in any way on this.
We won!
The rest is just excuses and rationalizations and blame passing and extra billing and recriminations and no one will admit the extent of the fiasco and... but....we won!
The rug lifts and I hear the sound of a broom...sweep..sweep...
We received the "long form", pages and pages full of the most disgusting, personal questions, like how much we spend on what, etc., completely irrelevant for head counting.
So I borrowed a short form and filled the questions from there, ignoring the rest, plus added a nasty remark about the US carpetbagger corporation hired to do the census and sent it by mail on the last day.
So, what happened, if the system sold by the war criminal corporation was supposed to be so great?
Ed Deak.
If the gun registry was a fiasco, should the census (carried out by a gun/weapon company) also not be??? Irony strikes again. And as far as I am concerned, this census does not measure the right things either. Aaaargh.

"We are all in this together somehow, some more than others somehow"
I got the long form too, I kept it. One of the questions asked was if I was white, black, several different types of arab plus other racial typing descriptions. They had no right to ask that and other questions. They got no answers of any type from me other than to tell several stats can workers that I would go to jail rather than answer any of their questions.
Seems that they (the top brass)are only interested in funneling money to corpse like Lockheed Martin, spend as little as possible on Stats Can workers is their idea of efficiency.
One of the very first things the Nazis did when they seized power was to conduct a census...

"Census officials couldn't get anyone to work for the $12 an hour pay"
I've been thinking about this one a little, and I can recall being visited at least 3 times by a worker, and I received at least 3 letters and several phone calls, so it seems clear to me the reason for Stats Can's failure had little to do with low paid workers, and more to do with the boycott.
I saw the report on the CBC's National and the workers were told to just find out how many people were living in the residence and name them anybody even Mickey Mouse or Mini Mouse statscan didn't care just get the numbers!
