That distinction was formerly recognized by current interim Liberal Leader
Bill Graham, who was foreign affairs minister in 2002, but he reversed his
position under intense pressure from the pro-Israel lobby.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Jewish group B'nai Brith Canada has been quick to
denounce the Lebanon trip by Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj, NDP MP Peggy
Nash and Bloc Quebecois MP Maria Moureni, accusing them of "undermining
respect for Canadian law" in calling for a review of Canada's position on
groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

CIC stated today that it endorses the position of other prominent NGOs,
such as the Canadian Arab Federation, that placing Hezbollah and Hamas on
Canada's banned list, while Israel continues to oppress Palestinians and
threaten its Arab neighbors, "is an unconscionable act of hypocrisy and a
mockery of justice."

ISLAMIC CONGRESS URGES GOVERNMENT TO TAKE HEZBOLLAH AND HAMAS OFF<br />
'TERRORIST' LIST<br />
<br />
-- IRA MODEL BEST OPTION FOR PEACE IN MIDDLE EAST"<br />
<br />
If they had a clue what the IRA model was, they wouldn't reccommend it for Hamas or Hezbolla. <br />
<br />

<br />
Why not de-list Al Queda too? Here's a hint - lay down your weapons, discuss peace like you actually mean to abide by it, then start to talk about reviewing the status of Hezbollla and Hamas.<p>---<br>"I think it's important to always carry enough technology to restart civilization, should it be necessary." All these so called terrorist organizations need to be de-listed and the offer of talk put forth. If after the US stops its imperialism, talks start but don't pan out then perhaps look at listing them but for now something like the IRA model would more than likely work to get these groups to disarm. It's a pity some governments don't want that to happen.

Terrorist List, No Fly List, Watch List, Enemies of the State List, etc. I am going to draw a line in the sand and if you don't join my side (the good guys), I will put you on a list. This is what human beings have been reduced to...being placed on lists for quick ID/profiling purposes.

hal @ Wed Aug 23, 2006 3:16 pm

Yes! remove the list, period. I was almost choked up to hear Borys Wrzesnewskyj show some Grit guts and speak the obvious, until his reigns were jerked back and he retracted an otherwise rational viewpoint.

Theres no such damn thing as a terrorist. Thats a political term of fascist practice, to discredit the very basis of dissent. We are not at war with an 'ist' or an 'ism' or any other abstract politacl euphemysim. These are people, motivated by the same thing as us, fear. Hamas and Hez do have elected officials. To rule their collective, representative views illegitimate is diabolicaly arrogant and makes a true joke of democracy.

Both groups were in fact supported by Israel in their early stages because they countered the advance of the PLO. Both groups should have follwed the IRA model, and split off their political wings long ago. It didnt actually work out for the IRA, but it did allow for dialoge at least, and there is peace there.

Mr.Wrzesnewskyj: show some spine, retract your retraction.

Hal, Ottawa

"ter?ror?ist /'t?r?r?st/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ter-er-ist] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a person, usually a member of a group, who uses or advocates terrorism.
2. a person who terrorizes or frightens others.
3. (formerly) a member of a political group in Russia aiming at the demoralization of the government by terror.
4. an agent or partisan of the revolutionary tribunal during the Reign of Terror in France.
–adjective
5. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of terrorism or terrorists: terrorist tactics.
[Origin: 1785–95; terror + -ist; cf. F terroriste]

terrorist

adj : characteristic of someone who employs terrorism (especially as a political weapon); "terrorist activity"; "terrorist state" n : a radical who employs terror as a political weapon; usually organizes with other terrorists in small cells; often uses religion as a cover for terrorist activities."

Well, those definitions are not particularly helpful (someone who commits 'terrorism'???).

By definition, we can include Christian abortion clinic bombers, although I'm not too keen on the tie to religion. Who says? Are the Tamil Tigers hiding behind religion?

The word, the war against, the concept. Meaningless.

anarcho @ Wed Aug 23, 2006 10:09 pm

Exactly. "Terrist" is a meaningless concept like "Commonis'" was for the MacArthyites. (Commonis' as in th "Commonis' Menace) One other thing, why do these right-wingers have such a problem with the English language? Take "nookular" as one more example of the above...

"Why not de-list Al Queda too?" <br><br> al-Qaeda, Qaeda, al-Qa'ida, al-Qaida, or The Base does not even exist, at least the evidence for it being anything of significance is nonexistent, or questionable at best. <br><br> <a href="http://www.spiked-online.com/Articles/00000006DFED.htm">Does al-Qaeda exist?</a> <br><br> <a href="http://www.aljazeera.com/me.asp?service_ID=9872">Aljazeera: Does al-Qaeda exist?</a>

Dr Caleb @ Thu Aug 24, 2006 9:28 am

So, if it doesn't exist, delisting it is no problem. Right?

Why on Earth would we de-list an organization sworn to the destruction of a UN member state until they change their tune?

My favorite part was this:

"The listing or de listing of political groups as so-called 'terrorist' organizations must be a political decision, made in the best interests of all Canadians, not dictated by special interest groups with agendas that are contrary to peace with justice"

Um, yeah. Canadian Islamic Congress is a special interest group with an agenda if ever one existed. Classic stuff.

Sgt_ShockNAwe @ Thu Aug 24, 2006 12:56 pm

They were LISTED after overwhelming pressure from Canadian Jewish lobby groups.

Bino @ Thu Aug 24, 2006 3:25 pm

So they should be DELISTED due to pressure from some Muslim lobbyists?

Again, if they are sworn to the destruction of a UN member state, I don’t see how you can argue they should come off the list.

rearguard @ Thu Aug 24, 2006 11:51 pm

"So, if it doesn't exist, delisting it is no problem. Right?" <br><br> In my view, there should be no list in the first place. Lists were wrongly used during the McCarthy era, and by all sides during WWII. Those long ago discredited lists ruined many innocent lives, and from that experience, history has taught us that the latest incarnation of lists will do us no better. <br><br> <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/08/05/lapierre-050805.html">Canada gets its own no-fly list</a>

So, grocery lists will destabilize democracy? I guess i'll have to put that on my list.

I think having a list of groups dedicated to the overthrow of democratic governments and the murder of innocent civillians is a good thing.

I would really like any politician to announce that along with Hamas, Hezbolla and the IRA, they are de-listing Al Queda. That would be the best day for democracy ever.

"I think having a list of groups dedicated to the overthrow of democratic governments and the murder of innocent civillians is a good thing."

So you approved of the McCarthy blacklists, the Japanese internment lists, Hitlers internment lists? Each of these lists were based on the same argument you are now making.

What good have any of these lists ever done for a democracy?
