Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confesses to September 11th attacks

National Security Correspondent Leigh Sales has been trawling through the transcript of his confession and she joins us now.

So Leigh, first just remind us just who is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and what evidence does the US have against him?

LEIGH SALES: He was the number three operative in al-Qaeda up until the time of his capture in Pakistan in 2003.

He had the sort of background that you associate with these very militant extremist terrorists. Raised in a religious household, he went to Afghanistan to fight in the anti-Soviet jihad, which is where he met bin Laden, and then he became, according to the United States investigators, intimately involved in al-Qaeda's operations and planning.

He was captured in 2003 and then held in a CIA ghost prison, which was one of the prisons that were secretly set up around the world for interrogations. And then late last year, the United States moved 14 of their top-level terrorism suspects to Guantanamo Bay.

Now the evidence that the United States has against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed comes from a couple of sources. It's partly from the testimony of other detainees or people who've been arrested in other missions.

Also when he was arrested in 2003 in Pakistan, police and military went through that house where he was staying and they seized a lot of material including several computers which had huge amounts of detail about the 9/11 attacks - photographs of the hijackers, information about how the mission would be executed. So they had a lot of evidence on him from that.

The sad part is although he isn't saying anything significant he didn't say before his capture, no one will believe him because of the US's insistance on using torture. We don't know he was or wasn't tortured, so we can't believe a word of it. Too bad, because it could answer so many questions if this were reliable information.--- The preceding comment deals with mature subject matter, however immaturely presented. I wonder if we will ever get to read his transcripts. As translated from his native tongue by an impartial translator.

Despite the news headlines screaming he masterminded Sept 11, I see no direct quote anywhere that states, 'I masterminded Sept 11' or something similar. He admits the known attacks other than Sept 11, but not the Big One, the biggest, most audacious, most organized, most planned attack in terrorist history, ensuring his place in the Terrorist Hall of Fame, an attack that makes all other terrorist attacks in history look like firecrackers. An attack that does not match any other attack in history, demonstrating a level of coordination, planning, and execution that had all the hallmarks of a covert military op, NOT a terrorist attack.

I stand corrected, I found another article where he admits being 'responsible for the 9-11 attack from A-Z'.

Now, where's the in-depth follow-up? Can we read his transcripts? What torture techniques were being used when he uttered those words to make it stop?

Guantanamo inmate claims beheading of Daniel Pearl

Among more than 30 attacks and plots allegedly confessed to by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed - the man long accused of organising the September 11 hijackings - was the beheading of journalist Daniel Pearl. 
 
It emerged yesterday that the Pentagon had held back a portion of a 26-page transcript of a legal hearing at Guantanamo Bay in which Mohammed claimed he had personally murdered the Wall Street Journal reporter in 2002. The Pentagon said it had done so in order to have time to warn the journalist's family. 
 
In the transcript, Mohammed told the tribunal: "I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew Daniel Pearl in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the internet holding his head." 
 
 
 
And tonights 11:00 pm news is reporting this with a straight face

I'd like all the Bush backroom boys that were front and centre prior to the Iraq
war, most of whom have faded into "you can't see me", "That wasn't me that said
that" land, tortured and see how long it takes for the real terrorists to confess to
all these confessions. Maybe we'd find out the truth about a few other unsolved
mysteries as well.

P.S. That's not to say I would exclude all the frontroom boys in that torture
session.

Isn't it amazing what "extreme interrogation techniques" and a accomplice, elite controlled, mass media can pump out as factual and as the "truth".

I can imagine, sadly enough, Bush and Cheney and others of their demonic ilk laughing at the gullibility of the people who get all their information from the commercial media.

The saddest part of all is that, more and more, people seem to be deciding that critical thinking is too difficult and then just choose to mindlessly accept the trash being fed to them.

At this rate, I'm not sure I really want to live to reach 100 years of age.
