At times I get confused: Am I seeing and hearing the old stories of Palestinians who fled their homes in mortal fear back in 1948?
Then I shake it off. No: I am in Beirut, it is 2006, and these are the stories of the Lebanese who have been rendered refugees, but by the same perpetrators of the 1948 displacement: the State of Israel.
Sometimes I have been collapsing. I cannot even write, or talk...I'm beyond sad for my countrymen, and for my French niece and nephew, who were excitedly dreaming of an adventurous summer in Lebanon, where they hoped to learn about their heritage, to attend a performance of the legendary Fairuz in Baalbeck, and to see the ancient ruins about which they'd read in their school in France. My niece was especially awaiting this visit; now it is far too dangerous for them to come here.
So I have been increasingly feeling imprisoned, in a jail cell that is getting smaller and smaller by the day. I miss strolling by the sea. I miss reading some news. In particular, I miss receiving good news...
Good news: Analysts are claiming Israel lost the war! Israelis themselves are now saying this. I never imagined in my life that I would hear of a defeat of the state of Israel without feeling victorious and elated. But I feel neither.
INSTEAD, I AM SCARED TO FEEL HAPPY. FOR I KNOW WHAT HISTORY TELLS US: THAT ISRAEL WILL NEVER ACCEPT THEIR LOSS; THAT THEY WILL EITHER KEEP ON KILLING US OR INVADE AGAIN SOON. GOD SAVE US FROM WHAT THEY WILL DO NEXT!
We woke up this morning to the news of another massacre in Qana, the little town that suffered so much in April of 1996. Reporters are still choking on the dusty air while they reported from the scene of the crime. The broken bodies of children and women start to come out.
Ten bodies were removed. Twenty bodies were removed. Forty bodies were removed.

I really don't know what they expected. They're all dead, soon to be ground under the tracks of Israeli panzers.
May as well turn off the tv, I don't want to listen to the crying of the Lebanese civilians any longer, while we sit back and watch the zionist blitzkrieg crush it's neighbor and expand the uber empire of Israel.
Israel Uber Alles
Israel Uber All!

“The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous, the essential act of warfare is the destruction of the produce of human labour”
It is sickening. A world gone insane where the moral compass says down is up and up is down. We won't have to listen to the cries of the Lebanese civilians much longer once the ground troops get moving and shut down the few real journalists left. They'll round up the journalists, a few of the less obliging will meet with unfortunate "accidents" and the rest will be evacuated or corraled in one "safe" location, like the Hotel Baghdad which may or may not prove all that safe, Next the only journalists with access will be handpicked and inbedded, and that's when reality will be reduced to the "one voice" and misery and suffering sanitized and repackaged as liberation or some other hogwash.
No, what happens with journalists is, the Israeli soldiers pick them off, no doubt bragging about it amongst themselves and getting 'extra points' from their commanders. The UN whines about it with a baby blanket over their head (baby-blue that is) and, after much braying and knashing of teeth by the Israeli government, the soldier is picked up and goes to court.
He shrugs and says, 'jeez, from 10 feet away, that camera looked just like an RPG-7!' the court fines him $100 and he's back on the front by lunch.
Like that sicko sergeant who walked up and pumped 3 rounds into the face of that 12 year old girl for trying to walk across the buffer zone. He got a slap on the wrist.
Or the rabbi who shot an innocent arab bystander to death after kids pelted his car with rocks. He was allowed to bring his gun to court, and while waving it in the air, ranted to his fans that he would glady shoot 20 arabs if given the chance, was given 6 months in jail, and was carried out of the court on the shoulders of cheering fans.

“The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous, the essential act of warfare is the destruction of the produce of human labour”
The only reason the UN doesn't work is because of people like Bush and Harper. Take them out of the equation, and the rest of the world leaders can get on with doing their job. As they are the only ones willing to speak the truth.
The truth is that Israel stole land from Palestine. They want water from Lebanon. They are in direct violation of the UN and our Government refuses to acknowledge this.
We are going to end up paying for all of this, with re-building and military forces that they want over there. Let the Israeli Government clean up it's own mess and pay for it. We should all refuse to help, they should be able to afford it considering the wealth of hand-outs and weapons they are given.
Israel won't listen to the growing awareness of it's own civilians who want these atrocities to end. The American, British and Canadian Governments are also ignoring the majority of their population.
I am ashamed. I am tired of watching our politicians pick up the pieces of the aftermath instead of having the guts to speak out about the truth and doing something about the real problem. Instead of giving Palestine back the land that is rightfully theirs. Instead of doing something about the human rights abuses.
Iggy is worried about Israel losing it's international support, how pathetic, another weak and delusional politician.
I hope everyone is keeping check on what our politicians don't say, and won't speak about, because that is just as important as what they do say, which is usually just a pile of BS anyway.

Kind of hit you in the stomach, doesn't it?
I am faced with two choices here: leave a comment and get on with my life or do something about it. Anything is better than nothing. I say those who have a blog publish it on her/his site (in such cases, redundancy is good! It also makes a point.) We email the link to the page to everyone we know, including MP's and political parties. We could even print copies and distribute to people around us.
During the first Intifada Palestinians made use of graffiti to spread news as well as handbills. In their book Intifada, "the inside story of the Palestinian uprising that changed the Middle East equation", authors Schifff and Ya'ari wrote:
If graffiti was the free press of the intifada, the handbills were its bible and signal corps combined. [...] As a rule, these leaflets were mimeographed or photocopied and were passed out during prayers by six- and seven-year-olds or piled at the entrance to the mosques so that each worshiper could take a copy. Other methods of distribution included tossing bundles of leaflets onto the streets from moving cars during the pre-dawn hours or sending young men out at night to slide them under doors and plaster them on telephone poles. Certainly it paid to make the effort, for the effect of these handbills was electrifying.

Isn't there a lesson to be learned for us here? Perhaps not exactly the same strategies, but surely we can allow ourselves to be inspired by those Palestinians' activism that ended up being quite successful even if though, unlike us, the conditions surrounding their everyday life were appalling and life-threatening.
Given the extraordinary forces of those on the "other side" and their war machine, you simply have to believe in the butterfly effect!
"the court fines him $100 and he's back on the front by lunch"
... with a $150 bonus added to his pay for the trouble and to cover the expense.
I posted the link up at my blog. I'm still sold on the idea of a group getting together in some type of media fashion. We just got some editing software and media stuff. It will take a bit to learn the ropes. But now with utube and on-line radio and such, there's really no limit to what we could do.
I'd love to go out and conduct interviews, do some recording, documentaries and stuff. We could also put them on cds and distribute them. Something to think about anyway. I am nowhere near ready to do it, but I am in the process of learning all I can.
Wouldn't it be great to find a politician we could stand behind and promote? Anyone want to step up to the plate and become the politician we are all waitng for?

I too, feel driven to let CBC and my government know just how much I am upset by my country's support for these Israeli atrocities and continuing violence, under the sham of 'defending ourselves' and 'destroying Hezbollah'.
I have started emailing CBC News, and I am looking for any upcoming demonstrations against Israel in my area.

Sarge, I hope you're also writing to politicians (the Opposition parties as well as Harper & MacKay).
And if you know where there's an Israeli consulate, just show up! Others will come.
Also check web sites of Cdn Peace Alliance and Jewish Women's Committee to End the Occupation and Students for Palestinian Rights, for example.
Good Luck.
NDP is now calling for a recall of Parliament, since MacKay and his lackeys managed to sabotage the Foreign Affairs Committee meeting yesterday (Aug. 1).
We can make this a rallying cry now: Recall Parliament! And mass-mail our Lib, NDP, and Bloc MPs. And how bout demanding a free vote on supporting Israel?

Thanks for that list Eleanor. I agree lets as many of us as feel the outrage do an emailing to Harper, Mackay, Alexa McDonough, (who did an outstanding job on the committee by the way, I saw it on CPAC), Graham, Duceppe, Layton, and then the MSM. Some addresses I have for them are: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected].
These are the times I wish I lived in larger community so that I could be part of a larger voice. Otherwise, I love being (was going to say bushed, yuk!) in the woods.

I wrote my MLA last night as a matter of fact. I didn't realize postage was paid if you mail an MLA. I'm gonna start sending that guy a letter a week!
