A spokeswoman for Lawrence Cannon, the federal minister of transport, infrastructure and communities, says Ontario's share will be about $7.9 billion.

The province had been asking the federal government to contribute almost $6 billion to fund its MoveOntario 2020 transit strategy, which includes 52 projects and 902 kilometres of new or improved rapid transit.

Premier Dalton McGuinty says he still doesn't know if the federal funding will go toward the transit plan.

Cannon's spokeswoman Catherine Loubier says negotiations are underway to pass on the funding to Ontario, and the federal government would be happy to see Ontario's transit system get an upgrade - if that's how the province chooses to spend the money.

"We're giving them $7.9 billion and it just might be they decide to spend it all on transit, but I don't know what the outcome of the negotiations will be."

She said the federal government hopes to have the funding allocated to all the provinces by the end of the year at the latest.
