Sections of the press have rightly drawn a parallel between the special prison under construction in Kingston and the concentration camp to which the Bush administration has disappeared alleged “enemy combatants” in Guantanamo, Cuba, labeling the planned Canadian facility “North Guantanamo” or “Guantanamo Lite.”

Four individuals will soon be transferred to the new prison: Mohamed Harkat, detained since December 2002; Hassan Almrei, detained since October 2001; Mahmoud Jaballah, detained since August 2001; and Mohammad Majhoud, detained since June 2000. Majhoud staged a 79-day hunger strike in 2005 to obtain basic medical care and the right to receive monthly visits from his two children, aged six and eight.

In the new prison, Majhoud and the other detainees will likely face even harsher conditions. Although it is being built inside the walls of the Kingston penitentiary, the new facility will remain completely separate from it. At all times, prisoners held there will be segregated from the regular inmates of the Kingston penitentiary and, most probably, from each other. The authorities are refusing even to reveal the size of the cells in which the security-certificate detainees will be held.

That exactly is the problem!
I am not so much laying blame as I am calling for attention to be brough to this fantacy called democracy. There must be total participation in it for it to not get to the stage it is now in
so in some ways I t looks good on those who ignore THEIR responsibilities, does it not?

Perhaps we Canadians are deverting our attention to the wrong direction. The softwood dispute may just be diverting our attention. This is first I heard of it and perhaps me, as well as you, should be getting vocal. We accuse the Americans of doing what our own country is slowly approaching. It's time we put an end to this nonsense. Connie F, lets get you up where it matters.

Would you check out that URL again? It doesn't work for me. I'd really like to see the rest of the article and cite it in something I'm publishing.

My biggest concern with the "Secret Trial Five" is that our courts seem very willing to normalize the policy of deportation to torture. Along with other Cdn policies that now whitewash torture, this is horrifying.

But if this article is correct, maybe they're not planning to deport them anywhere but lock them up in permanent limbo with no legal status, ever. It's almost as bad as "disappearing" them.
