Nevertheless, all governments still have a supreme responsibility to prevent such cultural intransigence from destroying the global commons that serve the greater good, and they would be delusional to think that big industry and big business would voluntarily reduce their production of greenhouse gases sufficiently in the absence of government levied carbon taxes and strict regulations for mandatory emission caps with extreme penalties for non-compliance. It is therefore crystal clear that in order to stabilize emissions at current levels our families, communities, businesses, industries and governments must be integrated into an immediate and sustained Global War on Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
Please take those first hard steps toward climate conservation right now. Break the mental shackles and recognize that our utmost fundamental responsibility is to quit destroying our earthly paradise. Learn that “less can be more” and reject the crass materialism that spawns greed, resource depletion, pollution, waste and evermore GHG emissions. Apply some common sense and some critical thinking and dedicate yourself to saving the planet and the people by practising intense conservation, by building activist communities and by supporting the politicians that not only pledge the toughest environmental policies but have the sincerity and fortitude to act while others just talk. We might still win this war, but only if everybody pulls together in good faith and votes intelligently and for the environment from now on.

From the article: "About half of polled Canadians don’t even believe that climate change poses a serious enough threat to merit any substantial lifestyle changes, so our governments feel justified in rejecting any environmental proposals that might threaten the status quo of our everyday existence."
Most of us live unconscious lives so it stands to reason that our consumption is done addictivly rather than consciously. Unlearning all that has been absorbed is going to be the biggest battle for the planet. It's been a given that if we can afford it, or, even if we cannot we are entitled to have it no matter what the consequences have been for the planet.

Even if the whole planet did a 180 degree about face in this respect that would not stop the SUN FROM BECOMING HOTTER AND WARMING ALL THE PLANETS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM. Studies have been conducted by scientists around the globe and the finding is that ALL the planets in our system show increased heating as a direct result of, you guessed it, THE SUN. Google 'sun warming'.

So don't worry about oil running out & global warming as a result of SUVs. It's not true. Don't buy into what the politicians say and accept their plans for a global environment tax.
So it's really all about yet another tax............

Oh my God Chris so you're saying that we've successfully damaged enough of our outer space to have affected the entire solar system? Shit, this way worse than I ever thought!
In the late 70s driving into Buenous Airies (good air?), the entire horizon was literally a black blanket over the city. It was astonishing for someone that at that time had never considered pollution as a serious problem for the planet. The entire week I was there I tried to hold my breath because the diesel exhaust fumes were so toxic.
If anyone saw "The Denial Machine" on the Fifth Estate it showed how the big oil companies are using many of the same PR firms that big tobacco did to deny that fossil fuels are contributing to global warming.

RPW, Another tax?
Massive tax shifting is what is called for. I would like to see new carbon taxes placed on consumption of all discretionary purchases at a high enough rate to allow us to eventually eliminate income taxes completely for 85% of Canadians.
I would also issue a carbon tax subsidy to poor households and individuals based on their gross income.
There are lots of other measures that tie into the overall reform of the taxation system.
