The prospect of an ever-declining voter turnout is scaring the shit out of most of the elites that have managed to make a damn good living by becoming "career politicians".

THEY cannot grasp why voters have become cynical and disdainful toward their cozy little cliques and manufactured adversarial routines that are part and parcel of political parties.

Their adversarial "schtick", exhibited in provincial legislative assemblies and Parliament, is an offshoot of the little playlets many of these lawyers( now MP's) were involved in when they went through law school. The “adversarial thing” is for public consumption, primarily … much the same as the phoney hates and grudges the World Wrestling Federation uses to create interest for their “entertainment product”. The one exception is sociopath Stephen Harper … his six shooter ain’t carryin’ blanks whenever there’s a Liberal in his path.

It wouldn't matter to them if only one person showed up to vote. That would still be enough for them to justify their humongous salaries & perks............

About the only way I can see to put a dent in this, is to have the number of seats in Ottawa directly represnt the voter turnout. So, if only 60% of people bothered to vote in 2008, then only 60% of the seats in Parliament would be filled.

Or -- the salries of the MPs would directly reflect the voter turnout. Thus, if only 60% of voters bothered to vote, then the salaries & perks would be only 60%............

In BC here, it would only be 50%.....

Well if democracy is based on "their" number of 50+1% , of a population based on those citizens who are registered to vote ..then should "Democracy" and the democratic process once it falls below "their" number be required to reform? I would think that one more addition on the ballot should be present, that being ?NONE OF THE ABOVE and if that is the winning vote, then the system must reforte so governing works from the bottom up ...not the top down and we should look at how the Political Party system is responsibale for the decline in voting .

The Low turn out should be a wake up call .

So what's the solution? If we don't vote then the leaders will continued to be elected by the people too 'stupid' not to vote. If we do vote we have the choices of Stephen Harper (baby eater), Mike Iggy (wuss), Jack Layton (windbag) or Elizabeth May (Haha, just kidding). There appears to be no way to officially abstain from voting and even if there was what would it accomplish?

We already know all of this crap you're spouting. Do you have any solutions? Anything constructive at all? Or are you just bitching like the Mike Duffy you supposedly hate?

Don't waste our time.

What we need is a communist party and a nationalist part with a lot of money to throw a lot of adds out that main stream Canadians would see. Freak them out so much they would go and vote

Perhaps each ballot should have a NOTA (none of the above) space to check.....

If I remember correctly, we are not told the % of discarded votes during an election. If there is only a 50% turnout, how many voters have willfully cancelled their vote ? I personally cancelled mine numerous times but I still showed up at the poll and was counted as "present".
