Originally he dropped the project because he wanted to stay true to the book, which would have made it 18 R. Just don't use Tom Cruise as was originally suggested.
Hopefully he can pull it off. Not sure what was in the story anyway that would have required an R-rating to begin with, as a HPL story really doesn't lend itself to a gory Eli Roth torture-porn shitfest. I trust Del Toro for the most part but he'll really have to stretch his imagination to do this thing right. I liked Blade and Hellboy, but I really don't want to see the Blade or Hellboy style/attitude in something that should be as monumental as an adaptation of ATMOM should rightfully be. Kind of weird that, after all these decades of HPL having such a major influence over writers and filmmakers that John Carpenter's The Thing can actually be considered the only real HPL-style & attitude film ever made.
I really love to see someone sell a genuine HPL storyline to HBO or AMC. Just tossing some HPL touches and teases into True Detective made the entire series about ten times as creepy as it would have been if it was just a standard cops/killer storyline. Do a season-long adaptation of Dunwich, Innsmouth, or Charles Dexter Ward at HBO or AMC and it'd probably totally fucking blow out everybody's minds.
According to del Toro, it was the human autopsy the aliens do.
Either way, here's hoping he can get the funds to make it.
I have seen very few good adaptations of Lovecraft stories, but if there is one director who I think can do it justice it is del Toro.
