I can't understand how people can be Jekyll/Hyde like that. Ellen plays so nice on her show, but is a total prima donna off camera. Is it so hard to be nice all the time?

I know show business is a heartless bitch goddess and you can't let people walk over you, but come on.

   

TBH my take is she is just seen as cold because she is NOT a socialite. She's a nerd and her standoffishness is seen as being aloof but in reality just is an intorvert. It then follows that from an HR point she's a delegate and disappear type so the people she hired to do the hiring and firing she never really vetted or checked up on and thus it morphed into this mess.
