Zipperfish Zipperfish:

The thing with horror movies is that they are only really good the first time.

The same with suspense movies, which I much prefer to what passes for horror these days.

Anyone who says they weren't scared by Alien is full of shit. That was the scariest movie of all time. I remember someone describing Alien like the first time they had sex: no matter how good they'd anticipated it would be, it turned out to be even better than expected once experienced.

The Amityville Horror? Horror? It was so bad it should be labelled a comedy, not a horror. It's not only the lamest horror movie of all time, but one of the very worst films ever made. The only horrors in the Amityville horror are the acting, writing and direction.

I thought the original Texas chainsaw massacre was scary when I was a kid, mainly because I found out some time around then that some events were loosely based on the life of Ed Gein. I think elements of psycho were somewhat based on his life as well.

I think when I first watched TexasCM, I was told it was a true story, which made it a lot creepier.

Ed Gein still stands out for me as the scariest mofo of all time.

LOL!!! I remember back in the day reading some item about the Exorcist and why it was so scary for the time. When the film was made in the early 70's the majority of Americans claimed to be religious. They "believed" in Satan, the Devil, etc. Seeing something that you actually believe can happen is much more scary than something that your mind does not believe in. If the villain was a werewolf, you would be scared for the instant that you were "surprised" by the monster. A few seconds later, your mind would tell you its only make believe. All parents have a fear of harm befalling their child. The fact that something is harming your child, and you are defenseless to oppose it is another master stroke when it comes to inducing fear. No religious parent can watch the Exorcist without succumming to the fear that this could happen to their child. The parent is being "punished " for their wicked behavior by the suffering of their child. Its every parents worst nightmare. The last part of the article is where the conspiracy theory starts. Back in the early 70's subliminal ads were in their stride. The article said that the Exorcist made use of audio subliminal messages of pigs being slaughtered. Anyone who has been present when a pig is slaughtered (among other pigs) knows how noisy and confusing it gets. I don't know about the subliminal part, (although it would explain grown men passing out in theaters in the 70's) but the mind believing what it is seeing and parents greatest fears would account for the terror of the movie for the time.

amityville horror was a shitty movie. I heard when exorcist appeared on cinemas, people actually died from watching it. it was so scary to them, they actually got a heart attack and died

Old, old movies in the list too. When I was in elementary it was the Cuban missile crisis, the Kennedy assasination, air raid sirens going off for practice drills, kids running home to hide in the basement "shelters"....

On The Beach

Didn't make you jump out of your seat like Alien or The Thing, but waiting around for weeks to die from radiation, Mom giving the kids cyanide pills, sailing around a dead planet... that shit kept me awake for years.

When we were living in Kaohsiung we had air raid drills a couple times a year. Air raid sirens wailing across the city and the streets were deserted except for the police.

I've seen it. It's unique and definitely a must-watch. It goes as far as eliminating horror movie cliches. :)
