Okay, this is a pretty big nerd topic, but one that deserves mention nonetheless.
I was watching Fanboys on the weekend when I thought that it was odd that the Jedis learned sword-fighting techniques.
Think about it. When are they trained for this? Who the hell did they plan on sword-battling? In the first few movies, the Sith are presumed dead or a legend. Every other puss-hole in the galaxy uses blasters, so being trained to deflect laser blasts make sense. Shit, it's the first thing Obi-Wan teaches Luke on the Millenium Falcon while they're flying through space.
But nobody else uses swords. Even if Dipshittleon the Space Pirate had a sword, it wouldn't be a lightsabre since Jedis make them to complete their training. The Jedis wouldn't need to learn how to fight him, they could chop through whatever sword he did muster and slice him like Thanksgiving dinner.
Think about Lumberjack school. They're taught how to use an axe; chopping, splitting wood with a variety of techniques and how to carry it. But they're not taught how to fucking axe-battle other axes because nobody else in the forest is going to come at them with an axe! Ditto the Jedis.
If nobody else in the universe can engage in swordplay with them, there's no need to teach them how to duel with them so Darth Maul, who could anticipate swordplay, should have ginsued Qui-Gonn and Obi-Wan in 30 seconds flat.
It's a glaring mistake. Maybe not the same as the fatal flaw Citizen Kane has, but a big ol' one.
Honestly I don't see the flaw. They may have thought that the Sith were extinct but the biggest reason why you would continue to train with the lightsaber is that the Jedi were very comfortable teaching people how to connect to the force THROUGH the abilities of learning how to sword fight.
When you find a good method of teaching you don't abandon it. They wanted not to teach the kids how to fight but how to use the force. They just used the one method they knew worked.
Holy shit. A topic I might know more about than Dayseed, and it's completely useless.
There is one main flaw in your argument:
The sword the robes, it is all Aikido. A martial art, philosophy, and religion leading to a natural balance with nature mind and body. (The Force?)
Still cracks me up...
Light sabers are reliable, it makes perfect sense. If you versus it against a gun, well the gun cannot simply win as the light saber can just deflect the attack. Can a gun do the same? The light saber has so much practicle uses, if you watch the movies it's basicly a door opener. Protects you against lasers and infact can cut people up like a knife on butter. What's not to love?
I dont know why they just didnt use flame thowers against the jedi...
I'm kinda disturbed that this was the ONLY flaw you could find in Star Wars
Isn't that the truth. I'd love to call total stupidity for example on the fact that a council of the most powerful Jedi in history couldn't sense that Palpatine was a Sith Lord despite him being in the same building and planet dozens of times and spying on him besides.
In the original trilogy Luke easily senses Vadar a number of times and Vadar senses both Luke and Obi-Wan without much effort. Yet a council of Jedi can't sense one of the largest Sith out there.
It's not like this is a small plot point either.
Common!
Or, that Luke was perfect for Jedi training by Yoda, but Yoda wouldn't train Anakin because he was too old.
Slight flaw there, IMHO.
He did. Obi-Wan talked Yoda into training Luke via the force.
Well, they still teach cutlass and saber fencing at the US Naval Academy and it is highly unlikely that anyone will need to use a cutlass to repel boarders. Still, it's a skill and, more importantly, a mental discipline that can be useful in other situations.
